A women’s strawweight rematch kicks off the streamlined undercard, as Alencar (5-0-1, 1-0 UFC) takes on Luciano (5-1-1, 0-0 UFC) for the second time in less than a year. The 115-pound hopefuls fought to a draw on Dana White’s Contender Series in September. Luciano was awarded a UFC contract for her efforts and Alencar received a traditional call-up for her Octagon debut, as she eked out a split decision over Rayanne dos Santos at UFC Fight Night 233 on Dec. 9. Jerin Valel draws the assignment as the referee. A glove touch gets us underway. Luciano takes the center and eats a head kick right out of the gate. Fortunately for her, there was not much oomph behind it. Alencar fires a leg kick, circles out into open space and steers clear of her opponent’s punches. Luciano tries and fails to corner Alencar, who continues to circle effectively. Luciano now using her seven-inch reach advantage to get her jab and one-twos in gear. She probes to the body, then misfires on an overhand right. Luciano sneaks in a left hook, then gets back to the jab. Midway through the first round, and neither woman has established too much of an advantage. Alencar mixes in a body-head combination, then fakes a takedown. Luciano jabs and manages to dodge the return fire. Ninety seconds to go. Luciano jabs, feints a kick and scores with a pawing right hook. Alencar swings wildly with both hands and misses. They clinch, and Luciano shoots a few knees to the body, then punches on the break. A flying knee from Luciano lands to the body. Jumping switch kick from Luciano gets blocked, but a knee that follows bloodies Alencar’s nose.

Luciano immediately gets back to the jab. Alencar ducks in for a takedown but fails to corral her counterpart, and Luciano escapes to a standing position. Luciano separates and unleashes more jabs. A spinning backfist from Alencar gets blocked. Both women tend to telegraph their strikes. Luciano sprawls on attempted takedown, takes top position briefly and disengages. More jabs score. Not going well for Alencar thus far. Leg kick from Luciano, then a chopping right hand followed by a left hook. Alencar eats a head kick without issue. Luciano blocks one in return, then connects again upstairs. Alencar now reaching on her punches, as she continues to struggle to find the mark. A minute to go, and Luciano is in charge. Luciano smiles at her adversary at the start of Round 3, and she has every reason to do so. They trade leg kicks. Alencar looks to pressure, but Luciano calmly circles away. Right cross-left hook combination from Luciano. She counters an Alencar leg kick with multiple punches. To no one’s surprise, Alencar needs this fight on the mat to have a real chance. Luciano denies a takedown, blocks a head kick and connects with a clean one-two. She backs Alencar to the fence with punches, engages her in the clinch and uses her height and leverage to her advantage. They separate midway through the round. Luciano drops her fellow Brazilian with a jumping knee. Alencar resorts to the butt scoot while she clears her head. Back on her feet now. Luciano looks to jab, throws a right hand over the top and engages Alencar in the clinch with double underhooks. They separate. Time running out on Alencar. Luciano leaving her feet to throw kicks and knees more and more as her comfort level increases. She lands a close-range elbow and a left hook. Alencar tries to answer. No luck. Luciano coasts to the finish line.

Williams probably needs a finish if he wants to keep his undefeated UFC record. Tentative start for both men. One-two from Williams misfires. Body kick from Diniz, who has never been to a third round before now. Leg kick from the Brazilian. Williams paws with his jab. Diniz gives him pause with sweeping hooks from both hands. Leg kick from Diniz. Left hook connects, and Williams is on skates. He shoots on a takedown and briefly drives Diniz to the canvas. Diniz gets back to his feet, only to be taken down again. One has to wonder Williams did not take this approach sooner. Williams works from half guard. No ground-and-pound yet. He controls the wrist and starts feeding Diniz punches. He mixes in a few elbows but lacks the intensity he needs. The door is open for Williams with a minute to go. Diniz doing a good job defending and stalling. Williams pounds the body with short punches, then takes aim at the head. Diniz clearly hanging on in a bid to kill the clock here. Williams gets busy with hammerfists across the final 10 seconds but cannot nail down the finish.

This could get ugly if Kianzad does not address the kicks. She doubles up on the left hook. Rosa answers with multiple low kicks, then steps into an elbow. They trade in the center. Rosa continues to damage the legs, then opens a cut on the forehead with another elbow. Blood streams down between Kianzad’s eyes. Rosa backs her up with punches, shields herself from the return fire and gets her hands in gear again. Kianzad welcomes her into the clinch with a knee to the ribs. Round 2
Barlow probes with low kicks. Veretennikov seems a little gun-shy to this point. Barlow counters a leg kick with an overhand left. Jabs from Barlow, though not much behind them. Veretennikov blocks a head kick. Output an issue for both welterweights. Jab from Barlow, who avoids a two-punch volley from the Kazakhstan native. They circle one another in the center of the cage. Jab from Barlow. Midway through the round. Barlow walks him into a clubbing left hand and forces Veretennikov to briefly shell up. He engages Barlow in the clinch but loses the battle for head position and winds up with his back to the fence. Barlow feeds him knees to the legs. A knee from Veretennikov strays south of the border and prompts Beltran to pause the action. They restart in the clinch. Ninety seconds on the clock. Barlow bails on double underhooks and moves back to the center of the cage. Veretennikov throws out his jab but fails to find a home for it. Jab from Barlow, who is doing just enough to stay in front. Uneventful round.

Round 3
Veretennikov tests the waters with his jab, but his punches lack conviction. He airmails an overhand right. Barlow alternating stances. Veretennikov steps into a right hand to the chest, fires an overhand behind it and wanders into the clinch. Front kick to the body from Veretennikov. One-two narrowly misses for the newcomer. Barlow chops away with punches. Veretennikov answers with a multi-punch volley. He then clips Barlow with a right hand and follows up with sharp jabs. Veretennikov lands a left hand over the top. Barlow responds with a jab. Leg kick from Barlow. Veretennikov picking up the pace with his jabs, finally showing some urgency. He steps into a right hand and sneaks in a looping left hook. Barlow on the defensive here, perhaps believing he has already salted away two rounds. Thirty seconds left. They trade left hands. Veretennikov plods forward, throws shots with both hands and connects with a body kick. He lands a right hand over the top before the horn sounds.

Elevation Fight Team’s Mariscal, who also missed weight, steps into the Octagon on the strength of a six-fight winning streak. Herzog draws the assignment as the referee. No glove touch. They come out swinging and wind up in the clinch. Both men target the body, Mariscal with punches, Jackson with knees. Beautiful takedown from Mariscal. Jackson scrambles to his feet and settles back into the clinch. More knees to the body from Jackson. Mariscal answers with a few of his own. Jackson works hard for a takedown but goes nowhere. Double underhooks from the Fortis MMA product. Mariscal separates, then crashes back into the clinch. They jockey for position along the fence. Mariscal separates and connects with three or four left hooks. Back in the clinch. Mariscal misfires on an uppercut. He emerges from the clinch with a cut under his left eye. Jackson moves in for a takedown, loses his balance and winds up in a disadvantageous position, with his back to Mariscal. A flurry of punches follow. They move back to the clinch and continue to trade. Both men bleeding from cuts now. They trade knees in close quarters. Mariscal is relentless. Jackson drops in on a takedown in the closing seconds, but his efforts prove unsuccessful.

Round 2
Jackson gets back to business with a leg kick. They return to the clinch inside the first 10 seconds. A knee strike from Jackson lands south of the equator, resulting in a brief pause. Herzog restarts them in the clinch. They jockey for position along the fence, trading knees when ever the mood arises. Action slows to a crawl. Mariscal trips Jackson to the floor midway through the round. Jackson initiates a scramble but cannot free himself. Mariscal hammers the side of the head with punches from a topside crucifix. Jackson retreats to his back, sets off another scramble and goes nowhere fast. Mariscal peppers him with punches, sprawls, takes a standing position above Jackson and drops hammerfists. The intensity of the barrage picks up. Jackson absorbing a lot of punishment in a short period of time. Mariscal now gets the elbows going. Jackson survives.

Body kick from Mariscal touches off Round 3. Jackson seems weary and understandably so. They clinch against the fence, and Mariscal feeds a series of punches to the body. Jackson answers with a knee. Short-range punches from Mariscal, who gets in on the hips and completes a takedown. Jackson on all fours. Mariscal fails to secure his position, and they trade reversals. Jackson gets back to his feet and shoots on the hips. His takedown attempt yields no fruit initially, but he sticks with it, locks his hands behind Mariscal and completes it. Jackson struggles to get anything going, as Mariscal utilizes an active guard and scrambles into top position. Mariscal drags the exhausted Texan to his back. Jackson gets to all fours, only to eat a series of hammerfists. Mariscal feeds punches to the side of the head. Fatigue a factor for both participants with less than a minute to go. Jackson gets back to his feet and eats a knee to the side of the head. Jackson turtles with 30 seconds left. Mariscal powers to full mount, settles on Jackson’s back, flattens him out and fires away with punches until the round ends.

Heavyweights close the show with a five-round rematch in the main event, as Spivac (16-4, 7-4 UFC) looks to avenge a February 2020 loss to Tybura (25-8, 12-7 UFC). Dean serves as the third man in the cage. They touch gloves. Spivac comes out firing with both hands. Inside leg kick from the Moldovan. Spivac punches into the clinch, moves behind the Pole and drags him to the canvas. He tries to take the back, squanders position and winds up on his back. Not where you want to be with Tybura. The former M-1 Global champion gets busy with punches, shuts down Spivac’s hips and settles in full guard. Spivac swivels his hips, isolates the limb and takes the armbar. Tybura has no choice but to tap.
