There’s a little bit of tension between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic just a few days before their championship clash.

Jones defends his heavyweight title against Miocic in the main event at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The two heavyweights have been respectful of each other throughout the build-up until recently. Miocic uncharacteristically called Jones a “b—h” in a recent episode of the UFC 309 Countdown show, which later caught the heavyweight champion’s attention.

The former light heavyweight champ felt disrespected and issued a warning to Miocic online. Jones also jokingly advised Miocic against hiring black training partners to mimic him. v “Hiring black fighters to mimic me will not help you Stipe,” Jones wrote. “And you shouldn’t have called me a bitch, the disrespect wasn’t necessary. Let’s play.”

Miocic was informed of Jones’ comments during an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s show. The former brushed off Jones’ warning while issuing an apology for hurting his feelings. The Ohio-based firefighter claims it was just a heat-of-the-moment reaction.

“Oh yeah, he was just talking to me and I was talking to him,” Miocic. “Like, you know, just bring it on. I don’t know. Well, I’m sorry if I hurt his feelings, I was just fired up. OK, I’m sorry if I was disrespectful to him anyway, it was just the heat of the moment. I’m sorry, I don’t know.”

Jones and Miocic were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 295 last year before “Bones” pulled out due to an injury. Jones made easy work of Ciryl Gane in his return to action after three years to win the heavyweight title at UFC 285 in March 2023. Meanwhile, Miocic hasn’t fought since losing his title via a knockout against Francis Ngannou at in 2021.
