For the first time this season, one of sports’ biggest rivalries will be renewed as the Boston Red Sox welcome the New York Yankees to Fenway Park for a three-game set that starts this evening (6:30 pm ET, ESPN+).
The Yankees (49-22) enter this series with the best record in baseball, ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies (46-22), Baltimore Orioles (45-23), and Cleveland Guardians (43-23). The Bronx Bombers also own the best road record in the league at 27-12.
Things are not going as swimmingly for the Red Sox (35-34), who are 13 games out of first. But after going five series without a win, they picked a fine time to end that run, taking two of three at home against the Phillies.
After taking care of business against the NL’s best team, can Boston do the same against the AL’s best team?
Tonight’s matchup will include a head-to-head duel between the top two AL Rookie of the Year favorites, Yankees pitcher Luis Gil and Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu.

New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox Betting Analysis
After winning the first three games of their series with the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees lost Thursday’s series finale in walk-off fashion.
They were blanked for seven innings by Alec Marsh, then scored three runs in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead. Clay Holmes got two outs in the ninth, but a Kyle Isbel single kept the game alive, and with runners on first and third, Maikel Garcia delivered a two-run double to hand the Royals a 4-3 win.
That prevented the Yankees from picking up their 50th win, but they are unlikely to have to wait too long to do so.
For the season, the AL East leaders are 14-7 (.667) in games following a loss. That ranks fourth in MLB behind the Phillies (16-5, .762), Orioles (16-6, .727), and Guardians (15-7, .682).
Additionally, they are 18-8 (.692) as a road favorite, which is sixth in MLB. Among the ten teams that have been favored in 15 or more road games, the Yankees rank second.
The Red Sox are a respectable 6-4 (.600) as a home underdog, which is sixth in MLB. But they are only 17-17 (.500) in games following a win, which isn’t particularly inspiring when they are going up against the best team in the league tonight.
They are also going up against one of the best pitchers in the league in Gil. He allowed three runs in 5.2 innings last Sunday against the Dodgers, but that was just the third time this season that he allowed three or more runs.
Season Splits for Luis Gil
- Home (seven starts): 5-0, 1.58 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, .125 OBA
- Away (six starts): 3-1, 2.57 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .151 OBA
In the previous two instances, the 26-year-old bounced back well in his following start.
After allowing three runs in five innings in a loss in Toronto on April 15, he allowed two hits, one unearned run, and struck out nine in 5.2 innings in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays on April 21. And after allowing season highs in hits (seven), runs (five), and homers (two) at Milwaukee on April 26, he pitched six shutout innings and allowed only two hits and a walk in a win in Baltimore on May 1.
While the betting value isn’t fantastic in this spot, there’s only one direction worth going here, especially with Bello having allowed nine runs, 17 hits, and six walks in 11 innings across two starts this month.
