The 2024 WNBA season has been underway for just over a month and the regular season is set to continue for almost three more months. However, at this point, it seems that it would require an extraordinary effort to prevent A’ja Wilson from securing the WNBA MVP honors this season.
In the initial 27 seasons of the WNBA, 16 players earned the title of Most Valuable Player. Wilson, who clinched the MVP title in 2020 and 2022, is one among the eight players who have won the award more than once.
Among the octet, the three-time winners from the Basketball Hall of Fame are Sheryl Swoopes (2000, 2002, 2005), Lisa Leslie (2001, 2004, 2006), and Lauren Jackson (2003, 2007, 2010).
If Wilson maintains her impressive start to this season, the group will be welcoming a new member in a few months.
Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces have suffered six losses already, equalling their total number of regular season losses in 2023.
The ex-star from South Carolina has significantly contributed to the two-time WNBA champions. As they prepare for tonight’s game against Angel Reese, a potential WNBA Rookie of the Year, and the Chicago Sky, Wilson is the league’s leading scorer with 27.8 points per game (PPG) and the leading rebounder with 11.6 rebounds per game (RPG). She is also second in blocks with 2.4 blocks per game (BPG), sixth in steals with 1.9 steals per game (SPG), and sixth in field-goal percentage at 52.4%.
Numerous exceptional performers and performances have graced this season, yet Wilson has distinguished herself in the WNBA MVP race. Her extraordinary level of play puts her on track for a historic, record-smashing season.
Is it possible for anyone to catch up to her? The leading players from other WNBA championship hopefuls are having strong seasons, but they are currently trailing significantly in the race.

2024 Season Stats for Wilson (14 games): 27.8 PPG, 11.6 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.4 BPG, 1.9 SPG, 52.4% FG, 38.9% 3PT, 85.7% FT
Diana Taurasi averaged 25.3 points per game (PPG) in 2006, securing the scoring title for that season. She remains the only player in the history of the WNBA to average 25.0 or more PPG in a single season.
Wilson will not only surpass Taurasi’s record but also become the first WNBA player to reach a 1000-point season if she participates in all 40 games this season and manages to average 24.1 points per game over the last 26 games.
Incredibly, she is not far from breaking the single season rebounding record. The current holder of this record is Sylvia Fowles, who achieved an average of 11.88 rebounds per game in 2018, narrowly surpassing the 11.85 RPG average set by Jonquel Jones the previous year.
If Wilson participates in all games this season and manages to average slightly more than 12 rebounds per game, she will surpass Fowles’s record.
The fact that she is realistically chasing both records indicates just how outstanding her performance has been this season.
Wilson has scored at least 21 points and grabbed a minimum of eight rebounds to date. She boasts of four games where she scored 30 points and another four where she scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds. This includes her last game against the Sun where she had 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Thomas (16 games): 12.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.7 SPG, 51.7% FG, 65.8% FT
In her last WNBA season, Thomas delivered her best performance yet, averaging 15.5 points per game (PPG), 9.9 rebounds per game (RPG), and 7.9 assists per game (APG).
Despite her numbers being down this season, she is a key reason why the Sun had a 9-0 and 13-1 start this season.
Thomas has not achieved a triple-double since her season opener against the Fever. However, she has come close on several occasions, being one rebound, one assist, two points, and a combination of a rebound and an assist short.
The Sun greatly values her versatility as they strive to clinically secure a championship this season. However, the question remains, can she surpass Wilson in the WNBA MVP race?
Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Collier (17 games): 21.4 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 46.9% FG, 30.8% 3PT, 81.1% FT
In 2023, the Lynx experienced another consecutive losing season. However, Collier performed exceptionally on an individual level, maintaining an average of 21.5 points per game (PPG), 8.5 rebounds per game (RPG), and 2.5 assists per game (APG).
Despite Collier’s impressive performance with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, Minnesota succumbed to the Dallas Wings today. However, the Lynx are back to their usual spot in the top ranks of the WNBA standings, with Collier continuing her stellar performance from last season.
Collier achieved her tenth double-double of the season against Dallas, one less than her 37 games last season. This accomplishment came only two days after her impressive performance in the Commissioner’s Cup final. She scored 21 points, made six rebounds, three assists, and three steals to secure a win for the Lynx against the New York Liberty, culminating in an MVP performance in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Collier is heading towards her second consecutive All-WNBA First Team selection and a fourth All-Star nomination. However, no runner-up awards will be given to the player who may come second to Wilson in the WNBA MVP race.
Breanna Stewart, New York Liberty (+2500)
Season Stats for Stewart (18 games): 19.7 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 4.0 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 48.1% FG, 25.3% 3PT, 88.2% FT
Can the MVP from last season advance in this season’s competition?
In her debut season in New York, Stewart scored an average of 23.0 PPG (a personal best), as well as 9.3 RPG and 3.8 APG (another personal best), surpassing Wilson to win the WNBA MVP honors.
So far this season, Stewart has achieved eight double-doubles, including a performance of 24 points and 11 rebounds during the Liberty’s Commissioner’s Cup final, which was unfortunately a loss to the Lynx. Additionally, she has managed to reach or exceed 30 points in three different games.
However, she has already scored less than 15 points on six occasions, and her external shooting is significantly lower than what we’re used to. Her lowest season perimeter percentage in her initial seven WNBA seasons was 33.3%, recorded in 2021.
Conversely, her present overall shooting percentage could be the second highest in her career, only surpassed by the 52.9% she achieved in 2018 during her inaugural WNBA MVP and championship victories.
Eventually, she will find her outside shot and it’s likely that her scoring average will soon surpass the 20.0 PPG mark.
However, she’s not the only potential MVP candidate from Liberty in the WNBA. Her teammate Ionescu, with an average of 19.3 points per game (PPG), 6.7 assists per game (APG), and 4.3 rebounds per game (RPG), is on track to break her personal best records in scoring and assists. In her last three games, she’s been outstanding, averaging 27.0 PPG, 9.7 APG, with a field goal percentage of 53.7% and a three-point shooting average of 48.3%.
