The 2024 WNBA season is just over a month in, with nearly three months till the regular season ends. However, at this point, it seems that it would take a superhuman effort to prevent A’ja Wilson from securing the WNBA MVP honors for this season.
In the initial 27 seasons of the WNBA, 16 players received the title of Most Valuable Player. Wilson, securing the MVP title in both 2020 and 2022, is among the eight players who have won this award more than once.
Among that group of eight, Basketball Hall of Famers Sheryl Swoopes (2000, 2002, 2005), Lisa Leslie (2001, 2004, 2006), and Lauren Jackson (2003, 2007, 2010) are uniquely distinguished as three-time winners.
If Wilson maintains her impressive start to this season, the group will welcome a new member in a few months.
Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces have already suffered six losses, equalling their total number of losses in the entire regular season of 2023.
The ex-star from South Carolina has certainly pulled her weight for the two-time reigning WNBA champions. As they face off against Angel Reese, a hopeful for WNBA Rookie of the Year, and the Chicago Sky team tonight, Wilson is leading the league in both scoring with an average of 27.8 points per game and rebounding with an average of 11.6 rebounds per game. She also stands second in blocks with an average of 2.4 blocks per game and is ranked sixth in both steals with an average of 1.9 steals per game and field-goal percentage at 52.4%.
Numerous exceptional performers and performances have marked this season, however, Wilson has distinguished herself in the WNBA MVP race through her outstanding play. She is currently on track to create a historic, record-smashing season.
Is anyone capable of outpacing her? Although top athletes from other WNBA championship contenders are having robust seasons, they are currently trailing significantly in the competition.

2024 Season Stats for Wilson (14 games): 27.8 PPG, 11.6 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.4 BPG, 1.9 SPG, 52.4% FG, 38.9% 3PT, 85.7% FT
Diana Taurasi made history in 2006 when she averaged 25.3 points per game (PPG), earning her the scoring title for that season. To this day, she remains the only player in WNBA history to have averaged 25.0 or more PPG in a season.
Should Wilson participate in all 40 games this season and maintain an average of 24.1 PPG in the remaining 26 games, she will not only surpass Taurasi’s record but also emerge as the first WNBA player to reach a 1000-point milestone in a single season.
Incredible as it may seem, she is also on the verge of breaking the single season rebounding record. Currently, this record is held by Sylvia Fowles, who managed an average of 11.88 rebounds per game in 2018, just slightly surpassing Jonquel Jones’s 11.85 RPG average from the previous year.
If Wilson manages to participate in every game this season and consistently averages slightly more than 12 rebounds per game, she will surpass Fowles’s record.
The fact that she is realistically chasing both records just underscores how outstanding her performance has been this season.
So far, Wilson has scored at least 21 points and grabbed at least eight rebounds. She has had four games where she scored 30 points and four games where she scored at least 25 points and had at least 15 rebounds. This includes a recent game against the Sun where she had 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Thomas (16 games): 12.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.7 SPG, 51.7% FG, 65.8% FT
In her last WNBA season, Thomas had her most successful campaign, with averages of 15.5 points per game, 9.9 rebounds per game, and 7.9 assists per game.
Despite her numbers being down this season, she is a major reason why the Sun began the season with a 9-0 and 13-1 record.
Thomas hasn’t achieved a triple-double since the season opener against the Fever. However, she has come close on multiple occasions, missing by a single rebound, an assist, two points, and on another occasion, a rebound and an assist.
The Sun greatly values her versatility as they aim to secure the championship this season. However, is she capable of matching Wilson in the WNBA MVP race?
Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx (+900)
2024 Season Stats for Collier (17 games): 21.4 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 46.9% FG, 30.8% 3PT, 81.1% FT
Despite the Lynx experiencing their second straight losing season in 2023, Collier still managed to perform exceptionally on a personal level, averaging 21.5 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game.
Despite Collier’s impressive performance with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, Minnesota lost to the Dallas Wings today. However, the Lynx are once again among the top contenders in the WNBA standings, with Collier continuing her outstanding performance from last season.
Collier’s double-double against Dallas marked her tenth of the season, one less than her 37 games last season. This achievement came just two days after she scored 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, leading the Lynx to victory in the Commissioner’s Cup final against the New York Liberty. Her contribution also earned her the MVP title in the Commissioner’s Cup.
The player who finishes second to Wilson in the WNBA MVP race won’t receive any runner-up awards. However, Collier is on track for her second consecutive All-WNBA First Team selection and a fourth All-Star acknowledgment.
Breanna Stewart, New York Liberty (+2500)
Season Stats for Stewart (18 games): 19.7 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 4.0 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 48.1% FG, 25.3% 3PT, 88.2% FT
Can the MVP from last season advance in this season’s competition?
During her inaugural season in New York, Stewart achieved an average of 23.0 PPG and 3.8 APG, both career highs, along with 9.3 RPG. She surpassed Wilson to secure WNBA MVP honors.
This season, Stewart achieved eight double-doubles, scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Liberty’s Commissioner’s Cup final loss to the Lynx, and managed to reach the 30-point mark on three occasions.
She has, however, scored less than 15 points on six occasions already, and her performance in outside shooting falls significantly short of our usual expectations. In her initial seven seasons in the WNBA, her lowest season perimeter percentage was 33.3% in 2021.
Conversely, her present overall shooting percentage could be the second highest in her career, only surpassed by the 52.9% she achieved in 2018 on her journey to her inaugural WNBA MVP and championship victories.
Eventually, she will find her outside shot and it’s probable that her scoring average will soon surpass the 20.0 PPG mark.
Yet, she’s not the only potential WNBA MVP candidate from the Liberty, with teammate Ionescu, who averages 19.3 points per game, 6.7 assists per game, and 4.3 rebounds per game, also in the running. She’s on track to set new personal bests in scoring and assists, and is currently experiencing an exceptional streak with an average of 27.0 points, 9.7 assists, a field goal percentage of 53.7%, and a three-point shooting percentage of 48.3% in her last three games.
