After battling for the WNBA title last season, the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty entered the 2024 season as the championship favorites. And approaching the halfway point of the season, the two teams remain at the top of the heap.
New York (15-3) doesn’t return to action until the Atlanta Dream visit Barclays Center on Sunday (1:00 pm ET, ESPN). But no matter what happens before then, the Liberty will be no worse than tied for the league’s best record with the Connecticut Sun (13-3), who visit the Washington Mystics tomorrow and host the Dream on Friday.
Meanwhile, with nearly two-thirds of the regular season remaining, the Aces (8-6) have as many losses as they did all of the 2023 regular season, when they went 34-6.
However, a run may be on the horizon for the two-time defending WNBA champions, who have the services of their fearsome foursome of A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, and a healthy Chelsea Gray.
Will the Aces and Liberty meet in the WNBA Finals for the second straight season? There’s a strong possibility that comes to pass. But the Sun (13-3), Lynx (13-3), and potentially the Seattle Storm (10-6) or even the Phoenix Mercury (8-8) may have something to say about that come September and October.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the WNBA Title This Season?
Las Vegas Aces (+150)
Life without Gray did not go well at all for the Aces. They were 5-2 at one point before losing three in a row and four of five to drop to 6-6.
Cue Gray’s return, just in time to dish some dimes and help the champs see off the Storm by 11. She didn’t have the same impact in the following game, but she didn’t need to as the Aces dispatched the Sun by the same margin.
Is this the start of a dominant pre-Olympic stretch? To put it mildly, the schedule lines up rather favorably.
Other than a game at Seattle on July 10, the Aces’ games before the break are against the bottom half of the league: two against the Chicago Sky (6/27 and 7/16), three against the Washington Mystics (6/29, 7/4, and 7/14), and a game apiece against the Indiana Fever (7/2), Los Angeles Sparks (7/5), Dallas Wings (7/7), and Dream (7/12).
They may be five games behind the Liberty in the standings at present, but a 10-0 or 9-1 run in this upcoming stretch could very well narrow that gap significantly.
New York Liberty (+180)
The Lynx, who beat the Liberty in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final on Tuesday and in a regular season matchup last month, have had New York’s number thus far this season.
As for the other league’s other contenders? The Liberty are 3-0 against the Aces, Sun, and Storm and have picked up wins at Michelob Ultra Arena and Mohegan Sun Arena.
The next few weeks will offer up a few more opportunities for the Liberty to showcase their championship contender credentials or even make an argument that they should be ahead of the Aces as the team to beat. Before the WNBA breaks for the Olympics, the Liberty have the Sun home (7/16) and away (7/10) and host the Lynx next Tuesday.
Connecticut Sun (+650)
After winning nine straight and 13 of 14 to begin the season, the Sun have lost their last two games to the Aces and Storm by double digits.
Does that merit an eyebrow raise of concern about whether this Connecticut team can be the one to finally get the franchise’s first WNBA championship?
It is worth noting that the Sun have come out on the short end in their three toughest games and needed two late, late free throws in overtime to beat the Lynx by one at home. Being 11-0 against the league’s below .500 teams and 2-3 against the teams who are .500 and above isn’t the most convincing resume, but the remaining schedule will offer several opportunities to show that they may have what it takes to take on and take out the Aces or Liberty in the postseason.
The Sun are arguably the best defensive team in the WNBA—the Lynx have a stout argument there as well—but will that defense travel when it matters? And will they be able to score enough to make that defense matter or overcome days when it isn’t at its sharpest? Their upcoming games against the Liberty, who lead the WNBA in scoring (88.1 PPG) and field goal percentage (45.7%), may provide a good indication.
Minnesota Lynx (+650)
The Sun’s blazing hot start garnered a lot of worthy attention, and the Liberty currently have the best record in the league.
But no team has improved or impressed like the Lynx, who were not expected to be a contender this season following consecutive losing seasons. The additions of Alanna Smith and Courtney Williams, a renewed commitment to defense, and Napheesa Collier doing Napheesa Collier things have thrust the Lynx into the thick of the championship conversation, even before their Commissioner’s Cup triumph against the Liberty.
Of their three losses this season, two are one-point road losses that were decided in the final seconds. The other was to the Aces at home. Everyone else has mostly been dispatched by double digits, with only two of their wins to date coming by single digits.
Most importantly, including their Commissioner’s Cup win over New York, Minnesota is 6-2 against the Aces (1-1), Liberty (2-0), Sun (0-1), and Storm (3-0) with road wins over the Aces, Liberty, and Storm.
Can they keep it up and make a run at claiming the WNBA’s best record this season? They face the Liberty (away), Sun (home), and Storm (away) before the break and take on the Aces home and away in consecutive games shortly after play resumes. Can they post a winning record in those five games? If they do, their WNBA championship odds may shorten and push them ahead of the Sun.

Is the Aces’ Three-Peat Trek Back on Track?
For it to be back on track, it would have had be off track. Was it? Six early losses would seem to indicate that, but with their back-to-back championships and a core that remains intact, they have built up some equity.
Sure, their struggles, especially on the defensive end, were a sight to behold (no doubt a joyous one for fans whose teams have been terrorized by the Aces in recent years). But with Gray back in the fold, we may about to see the champs flex their muscles and show that they are who we thought they were and then some.
Should the Storm or Mercury Be Considered Contenders?
Could someone other the Aces, Liberty, Lynx, or Sun emerge as a contender?
The likeliest possibility is Seattle. After adding Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith in the offseason, the Storm (10-6) have already surpassed their win total from last season, when they went 9-31 in their first season post-Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird.
The Storm are 2-5 against the Aces (1-1), Liberty (0-1), Sun (1-0), and Lynx (0-3), and all five losses are by nine or more points. So, they aren’t quite in that top group just yet.
But if more shots start falling for Diggins-Smith (41.6% FG for her career, 39.7% FG this season), Jewell Loyd (40.4% FG and 35.2% 3PT for her career, 33.7% FG and 22.9% 3PT this season), and Ezi Magbegor (52.2% FG for her career, 48.4% FG this season), all of whom are shooting below expected percentages, the Storm have the pieces in place to make a run.
Could the Mercury get in the mix? Phoenix has what is perhaps the ugliest performance of the season (a 70-47 loss to the Sun on May 28). But they also have wins over the Aces, Liberty, Lynx, and Storm, and a team with a core of Brittney Griner, Kahleah Copper, Diana Taurasi, and Natasha Cloud has the goods to give a contender a real headache come playoff time.
