The USA cricket team, who previously sent shockwaves throughout the cricket world with their historic upset in the Men’s T20 World Cup, narrowly missed another upset against India on Wednesday. They still have a chance to secure a spot in the Super 8s if they win their match against Ireland today. Meanwhile, Ireland is also aiming for a victory to keep their Super 8s aspirations alive.
The USA opened the tournament with victories over Canada and Pakistan, batting impressively as they attempted to chase down targets. They lost only three wickets in each game.
But in Wednesday’s match against India, they went to the crease first for the first time and struggled to post a competitive total. Multiple times, they started putting together a partnership only to lose a wicket. After Corey Anderson fell on the penultimate ball of the 17th over, the USA managed only 14 runs across their final 19 balls to finish at 110 for 8.
However, they deserve credit for pushing India to earn their victory. After 7.3 overs, the tournament favorites found themselves at a disadvantage of 39 for 3, following the dismissal of Rishabh Pant. Nevertheless, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube expertly steered India to victory with an unbroken partnership of 72 runs, reaching the 111 target with ten balls remaining.
The USA’s net run rate took a hit with the defeat, but they still have a chance to reach the Super 8s. This is possible even with a loss today, provided Ireland manages to surprise Pakistan with a win on Sunday.
Naturally, assistance won’t be needed if the task can be accomplished today at Central Broward Park. While the match odds lean towards Ireland, the USA’s performance in their initial three games offers substantial optimism about their potential to achieve a landmark outcome.

It’s not surprising that the USA had a hard time scoring runs against India. In the tournament’s initial two games, India managed to limit Ireland to 96 runs and Pakistan to 113 runs. Therefore, the situation isn’t entirely grim for the USA.
Nonetheless, considering India’s struggle in their chase, it’s important to contemplate how critical an additional 15 or 20 runs might have been.
Today, we should expect more runs on the scoreboard, particularly with the anticipated return of captain Monank Patel to the starting XI after his injury absence on Wednesday. Shayan Jahangir, who filled in for him, was dismissed on the first ball of the innings. This marked the first of Arshdeep Singh’s four wickets for the day.
