The Stanley Cup Final, beginning on Saturday, will be an important proving ground for both teams involved. The Panthers are under scrutiny, having made it to the championship round for two consecutive years, but whether they can secure their first-ever Cup win remains to be seen. On the other hand, the Oilers are returning to this stage after almost 20 years, with their last victory dating back 35 years.

This year’s championship matchup is also packed with plenty of NHL betting opportunities. This article aims to kick-start things as we delve into the initial Oilers vs. Panthers odds and my preliminary Stanley Cup Final predictions.

Early Oilers vs Panthers Stanley Cup Final Predictions & Best Bet

The events of the 2023-24 playoffs until now are officially irrelevant. The Oilers and Panthers are beginning anew this weekend, and only time will reveal who will emerge as the victorious team after the dust settles.

As previously stated, this is somewhat unfamiliar ground for the Oilers, who have not participated in the Stanley Cup Final for almost two decades. They have triumphed over some formidable teams to make it back to the championship round, defeating the Los Angeles Kings in 5 games, their rivals the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games, and the Dallas Stars in 6 games. As expected, Connor McDavid with 31 points and Leon Draisaitl with 28 points, have been the standout players for Edmonton thus far.

On the other hand, the Panthers are contending for a title for the second consecutive year, wishing for a different outcome this time around. They kicked off the postseason by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games, and then took only six matches to knock out the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers.

Three players, including Matthew Tkachuk who leads his teammates with 14 assists and 19 points, have been instrumental in the Panthers’ postseason run, each playing at a point-per-game pace.

Matthew Tkachuk continues to be the Panthers’ best player throughout the 2023-24 NHL postseason.

In the initial stages of the playoffs, both teams struggled with inconsistent goaltending. This trend, however, shifted during the conference finals. Stuart Skinner of the Oilers recorded a 1.91 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in six games against the Dallas Stars. Similarly, Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers achieved a 1.89 GAA and a .921 SV% against the New York Rangers.

The Oilers outperform the Panthers in special teams, with the highest rates in the NHL for both power play (37.3%) and penalty kill (93.9%). In comparison, Florida is ranked sixth (23.3%) and second (88.2%) in these respective areas.

The Panthers had a 2-0 straight-up (SU) record against the Oilers in the regular season, securing a 5-3 win at home and a 5-1 victory on the road towards the end of 2023. However, Edmonton has maintained a strong record of 19-6 SU in its last 25 encounters with Florida.

The Oilers tend to win more often than not when they face the Panthers. Will that trend continue into the Stanley Cup Final?

This series could potentially swing in either direction. The Panthers, with their deeper squad and recent experience of the pressure that comes with the Stanley Cup Final, are a strong contender. However, one cannot discount the combined prowess of McDavid and Draisaitl, especially considering they have the backing of an entire nation.

I’ll take the Panthers to win, though, mainly because of last postseason’s experience. The Oilers are still young and have a lot of learning to do, which could come back to bite them in this series.

As for the best bet, I’m taking Connor McDavid to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He’s easily been the best player throughout the playoffs and is more than good enough to win this award, whether the Oilers win or lose the series. After all, five players in NHL history have won the Conn Smythe while being on the losing team.

McDavid is the one who could possibly be the sixth.
