The Cincinnati Reds (40-45) and New York Yankees (54-33) continue their three-game series on Wednesday when they collide at Yankee Stadium beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET.

The Reds opened up the series with a shocking 5-4 win over the Yankees last night. New York scored four unanswered runs but it was too little too late as Cincinnati held on for the win, marking Graham Ashcraft’s fifth victory of the 2024 MLB season.

Can Cincinnati clinch a series win with a similar effort tonight? Or will New York find a way to win in the Bronx?

Let’s answer those questions and determine the best MLB bets as we dive into tonight’s Reds vs. Yankees predictions and picks.

Reds vs Yankees Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/3)

It’s safe to say that this series didn’t begin the way that the Yankees planned. A poor start cost New York the game as starting pitcher Luis Gil was chased from the mound after surrendering four earned runs and a homer on just two hits across four innings.

Nevertheless, the Yankees must forget about their latest loss and focus on how they’re going to end their rut. The Bronx Bombers are only 4-11 SU in their last 15 games five of their last six outings at Yankee Stadium. The slump has caused them to drop from first in the American League to third, also losing the No. 1 AL East seed to the Baltimore Orioles in the process.

The Reds have also been doing more losing than winning lately, playing to a 4-6 SU record in their last 10 games. They’re also 10-11 SU against AL clubs this season whereas the Yankees are 13-11 SU when facing NL teams.

Although the Reds won last night, it remains to be seen if that was a fluke. After all, Cincinnati is just 4-10 SU in its last 14 games against New York and has dropped six of its last nine trips to the Bronx.

Can the Yankees buck their slump with a win against the Reds tonight?

Pulling off upsets is something that the Reds haven’t done much of this season — especially on the road. In 33 games as the road underdog the season, Cincinnati is just 12-21 SU (36.4%). Conversely, the Yankees are 23-13 SU (63.9%) as the home favorite in 2024.

The Yankees also own an 11-6 team record when Carlos Rodon starts a game this season. Unfortunately, the former two-time MLB All-Star hasn’t been his usual self lately, going 0-3 with a whopping 13.17 ERA (no, that isn’t a typo) in his last three appearances, failing to pitch more than five innings each outing.

Meanwhile, Reds left-handed hurler Andrew Abbott was nearly flawless during June. The ex-UVA product made five starts last month, going 4-1 with a 3.71 and 26 strikeouts across 26 2/3 innings.

It’s worth noting that New York is only 10-12 SU against lefties this season.

Will Reds LHP Andrew Abbott pull off the upset against the Yankees tonight?

I expect the Reds to put up a fight after last night, but let’s take the Yankees to win. Aaron Boone’s club is due to get back on track and I could see that coming if they build off the momentum stemming from their four unanswered runs last night.

With that being said, it might be an ugly game, so take the Over on the 8.5-run total. Not only is the Over 6-3 in Cincinnati’s nine previous games, but it’s also 7-0 in the Yankees’ last seven outings. It’s also 4-2 in the last six Reds-Yankees tilts, averaging a combined 9.8 runs per game.

With the Over also being 42-26-2 when the Yankees’ are the favorite, it’s easy to imagine today’s meeting turning into a high-scoring affair.

Best Reds vs Yankees MLB Player Prop (7/3)

As for my Reds vs. Yankees player prop pick of the day, I suggest taking Carlos Rodon u6.5 total strikeouts (-130).

Rodon has racked up strikeouts throughout his career, but Father Time might be catching up. The 31-year-old southpaw strikeout total has declined in the last two or so months as he’s averaged just 5.4 Ks in his last nine starts, finishing with the Under on this prop six times. The Under is also 4-2 in his six starts at Yankee Stadium this season.

Although the Reds haven’t been the best at making contact with the ball this season, their 217 strikeouts in June were the 13th-fewest in the Majors. Combine that with Rodon’s recent struggles, and I’m feeling confident about the Under tonight.
