Red Sox vs Mets Predictions & MLB Picks Today (9/2)

The Mets return to Citi Field for the first time since Aug. 21 with a decent amount of momentum on their side. They went a solid 7-3 SU on their 10-game road trip, which includes winning the last four outings in a row. The Mets held those opponents to an average of 1.5 runs per game while boasting a plus-2.3 average run margin.

New York has also been playing well at Citi Field lately with wins in five of its last eight home games.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, have been trending in the wrong direction since the MLB All-Star Break. Since July 19, Boston’s 41.5% win percentage (17-24 SU) ranks fourth-worst in the Majors, trailing only the Chicago White Sox (10.0%), Pittsburgh Pirates (37.5%), and Los Angeles Angels (39.0%).

It doesn’t help that the Red Sox have also dropped eight of their last nine inter-league tilts.

Will the Red Sox return to the win column tonight?

The good news for the Red Sox is that they’ve had a ton of recent success against the Mets. Not only is Boston 8-1 SU in its last nine matchups against New York, but Alex Cora’s club has also won six of its last seven trips to Citi Field.

The Red Sox are turning to Brayan Bello to keep that trend going. The 25-year-old righty was one of Boston’s best pitchers during August, going 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA and 22 strikeouts in his last four starts. Furthermore, he hasn’t even lost a road start since May 17, having gone 3-0 with a 3.07 ERA in his five previous away appearances.

Meanwhile, the Mets are hoping that RHP Luis Severino can bounce back after allowing four runs and two homers in 4 2/3 innings during last week’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Having said that, Severino did pitch a complete game shutout against the Miami Marlins in his last home start on Aug. 17, leaving time to tell if he can build off that success.

Which version of Mets RHP Luis Severino will appear on the mound tonight?

Even though the Red Sox are desperate, I’m taking the Mets tonight. New York is the better team at the moment and its recent success cements that fact. Until the Red Sox begin to win consistently, it’s going to be hard trusting them — especially on the road.

With that being said, you should back the Over on the 7.5-run total. After all, Severino’s last six starts saw an average of 10.2 combined runs scored while 11 of Bello’s last 14 starts also exceeded today’s projected total. With the Over also being 13-7 when the Mets host an American League team this season, it’s easy to see why we might be in for a bit of offense this evening.

Even though his last performance was far from the best, Severino has still held two of his last three opponents to one or zero runs. He’s now going up against the Red Sox, who are batting .163 with 30 strikeouts in their last four games while being limited to fewer than 2.5 runs in three of those contests. Even though it’s a small sample size, Boston’s recent offensive struggles can’t be ignored.
