Rangers vs Penguins NHL Predictions & Picks (10/9)
The Rangers enter the new NHL season looking to pick up from where they left off in the spring. After going 55-23-4 in the regular season, New York made its second Eastern Conference Finals appearance in three postseasons before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers in six games.
The Penguins, on the other hand, didn’t experience nearly as much success. Sidney Crosby & Co. finished with a 38-32-12 record, resulting in their missing the NHL playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time in nearly two decades.
The Rangers were one of the best teams on both sides of the puck last season, scoring an average of 3.39 goals (7th) while surrendering 2.70 per game (T-5th). Their offensive charge was led by none other than Artemi Panarin, who paced his teammates with 120 points in 82 games.
On the flip side, the Penguins were a middle-of-the-pack team defensive, allowing 3.02 goals per game (T14th). Unfortunately, an offense that only produced 3.09 GPG (T-18th) held back the club from achieving any real success.
The Rangers boast some of the NHL’s top offensive threats, including Artemi Panarin (L) and Mika Zibanejad (R).
The Rangers also have a clear-cut advantage regarding special teams. They finished with the third-best power play and penalty kill last season, whereas the Penguins finished 30th and 11th, respectively, in that regard. Considering how Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan is back for yet another season, I don’t see those trends changing too much.
With the above in mind, I’m predicting the Rangers to open the 2024-25 season with a victory. New York is projected to be a Stanley Cup contender (+1200 on BetOnline) this season while Pittsburgh will be lucky if it makes the playoffs. There’s also the fact that the Rangers have won seven of their last encounters with the Penguins.
The Rangers also outscored the Penguins 8-4 on aggregate in two meetings at PPG Paints Arena last season, so let’s take them to cover tonight’s puck line.

Best Rangers vs Penguins Player Prop (10/9)
I’m going with Chris Kreider o2.5 shots on goal (-154) for tonight’s top Rangers vs. Penguins player prop.
Kreider generated plenty of scoring opportunities last season, amassing 246 shots in 82 games — an average of exactly 3.0 per outing — while finishing with the Over on this prop in 43 of those outings (51.8%). The veteran sniper also has 12 goals and 46 shots in his last 14 matchups against the Penguins, which saw him tally three-plus SOG nine times during that stretch.
After the Penguins surrendered the 13th-most SOG last season, I’m confident that Kreider will pull through on this prop again.
Best Rangers vs. Penguins Player Prop: Chris Kreider o2.5 Shots on Goal (-154)
