Phillies vs Dodgers: MLB Prediction, Odds & Best Bets (8/5)

The baseball Gods have given us a gift from heaven tonight, as two National League Goliath’s face off in a potential NLCS matchup. The Philadelphia Phillies are headed to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers out at Dodger Stadium for a 3 game series between these two teams. Both squads have a stranglehold on their division as it currently stands, but they are battling each other for the top seed in the National League as a whole. Ultimately, there can only be one, and the Dodgers will be playing with a huge chip on their shoulder as they were swept earlier this year in Philadelphia. The Phillies are also 1.5 games ahead of the Dodgers, leading the entire National League.

Two Studs Face Off

Not only do we have two great teams facing off, but we’ve also got two incredible pitchers on the mound! Tyler Glasnow starts for the Dodgers and Aaron Nola for the Phillies, and we are in for a treat. The pitchers both boats sub 3.50 ERAs and sub 1.10 WHIPs, with Glasnow posting a 0.96 of his own. While Nolas’s splits are slightly worse on the road, he has won 2 of his L3 road starts, and hasn’t lost on the road since June 13th. The Phillies had lost 6 straight before beating the Mariners last night, and as a team, they are just 4-11 hitting .232 as a team.

As for Glasnow, his numbers don’t change much on the road or at home, but his WHIP does drop to 0.94. Absolutely incredible stuff. However, he has had a couple rough outings since the break, and hasn’t recorded a win since June 22nd. He’s 0-1 since the break, and the Dodgers have lost both games he started. While the Dodgers have won two straight and are 9-6 since the break, they are hitting just .236 as a team, which is way lower than their season average.

With two studs on the mound, and two struggling hitting lineups, will we see any runs tonight in LA?

Will Glasnow Lead Dodgers to Home Victory?

Can Glasnow shutdown the Phillies hitters at home?

Despite Glasnow’s incredible home splits, he has struggled since the break. In 12 innings, he’s allowed 5 runs on 10 hits and 5 walks, including 2 home runs. He picked up the loss at home to the Giants, but he is 6-4 at home this season. However, the Phillies have been struggling big time. This team hits .255 overall and .251 at home, dropping to just .249 against RHP. But the struggles have been real, as July was their worst hitting month as a team and the Phillies hit just .232 since the break. They still lead the NL East by 6 games, but now is the time to turn things around and string some wins together.

The Dodgers hit worse as a team at home and against RHP, plus Nola will be no easy matchup. The Dodgers hit .237 in July but are back up to .252 through 3 games in August. Los Angeles is 6-1 at home since the break, and are finally back after a long 8 game road trip. In front of their home crowd, I could see them popping off and producing some runs off of Nola. None of these hitters on either team have much experience against either pitcher, but given the recent downslide for both guys, they might give up plenty of hits tonight.

Nola did get a win off the Dodgers on July 11th just before the break. He pitched 6 innings at home, allowing just 1 solo home run and 4 total hits while striking out 9 and picking up his 11th win of the season. But now he is on the road, and has given up 6+ hits in his last 3 starts. Personally, I think I will be betting against the pitchers tonight in this duel.

Fading Nola and Glasnow is never fun, especially with both teams’ bats slumping. However, we know what these offenses are capable of. The Phillies put up 10 of their own against LA earlier this year, and the 2nd game ended at 7 runs exactly. I trust the offenses to make some noise and take advantage of the pitchers tonight.

The Phillies and Dodgers combined for 3 Elite hitters tonight, 2 others with a Great matchup, and 3 others that are Above Average tonight according to batters-box.com (Do NOT forget the hyphen). Only 3 batters who won’t see the field have poor ratings, and I trust that these hitters could turn things around tonight. Again, fading these two pitchers sucks, but I think tonight we see a 4-4 ball game at least, and who knows, if we go over in extras, a wins a win!
