Today’s Phillies vs. Cubs MLB predictions and best bets are brought to you by BetOnline. BetOnline is a market leader in sports betting, offering various options from MLB odds to the NBA and everything in between.

As the 2024 MLB All-Star Break nears, Tuesday’s schedule sees the Philadelphia Phillies (55-29) beginning a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs (39-46) at Wrigley Field.

The Phillies are hitting the road in search of momentum after a split four-game series with their rivals, the Miami Marlins. On the other hand, the Cubs are returning home following a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

Will Philadelphia secure another victory? Or will Chicago triumph on their home turf?

We will respond to those inquiries and spotlight today’s top MLB bets as we delve into my predictions and picks for the Phillies vs. Cubs game.

Phillies vs Cubs Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/2)

Tonight, the Phillies are heading into the match as the top team in the Majors, but they’ve been lacking consistency recently. Over the past few weeks, they’ve been going back and forth between wins and losses, resulting in a 9-9 straight-up record in their last 18 games.

One of the big reasons behind Philadelphia’s recent back-and-forth play is injuries. Two of the Phillies’ top bats — Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper — are currently on the 10-day injured list and won’t be back until the weekend at the earliest. Regardless of how good the rest of the roster is, not having Schwarber and Harper for any stretch hurts.

The positive aspect for the Phillies is that the Cubs are currently experiencing a bit of a slump. Despite Chicago maintaining a roughly .500 record at the start of June, the team is now seven games under this point after a terrible 2-6 straight-up run over the previous eight matches. Even though five of these losses were away games, it doesn’t necessarily mean that playing at home will bring any improvement.

In the end, the Cubs have just managed a 3-4 straight-up record in their recent seven home games. Not to mention, they also have a 7-10 straight-up record against the NL East this season. On the other hand, the Phillies have a 12-8 straight-up record against NL Central teams.

The Cubs haven’t experienced much success against NL East clubs this season.

Chicago hasn’t been very fortunate recently against Philadelphia. The Phillies have managed to secure a five-game winning streak against the Cubs, surpassing them by an average of 3.8 runs in those encounters.

The Phillies need a strong performance from Michael Mercado to maintain their trend. This is Mercado’s first start in the MLB. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher has had a solid year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, recording a 1-1 win-loss record, a 2.28 ERA, and 44 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings over 14 games, 10 of which he started.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are giving Hayden Wesneski another shot, despite him only making four starts in 21 games. Wesneski has had more decent performances than bad ones in 2024, but he’s given up seven earned runs and four home runs, along with seven walks in his last eight innings. Additionally, he hasn’t won an appearance since April 25 and hasn’t pitched five innings since May 8.

How long will Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski last on the mound tonight?

With the ways the Cubs have performed lately, I’m taking the Phillies to win. Even with the injuries piling up, Philadelphia is still the MLB’s best team and has more than enough talent to upset Chicago on the road.

Keeping that in mind, we’ll also back the Phillies on the moneyline. Again, they’re the better team here and proved that last year by going 5-1 SU against the Cubs. Expect history to repeat itself at Wrigley Field.

Best Phillies vs Cubs MLB Player Prop (7/2)

With Harper and Schwarber sidelined, I’m taking Nick Castellanos o0.5 runs + RBIs (-132) for the best Phillies vs. Cubs player prop bet.

Lately, Castellanos has been showcasing his top performance of the season in baseball. The two-time MLB All-Star has been exceptional in his most recent 13 games, boasting a slash line of .380/.429/.600 and accumulating 19 hits, two home runs, four runs, and 12 RBIs. This includes the three RBIs he collected in his last game. Additionally, his performance at Wrigley Field in his last three visits has been impressive, with five RBIs and two runs, averaging 2.3 Runs+RBIs per game.

Given that Wesneski isn’t the most dependable player for the Cubs, this presents a great chance for Castellanos to maintain his excellent performance.
