Phillies vs Braves Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/20)
Even though we’re already nearing August’s end, these NL East rivals have only collided six previous times this season. The Braves have taken the early advantage with a 4-2 SU record against the Phillies thus far, which includes two victories while outscoring the latter 17-9 on aggregate in three games at Truist Park last month.
Nevertheless, Philadelphia still heads into tonight’s contest with a seven-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East race.
The Phillies have also done a good job at generating momentum lately, winning four of their last five games. Meanwhile, the Braves notched six victories in their nine previous outings and are coming off back-to-back victories over the Angels.
Having said that, Truist Park hasn’t given the hosts much of an advantage lately. The Braves are currently on a five-game losing streak at home, falling by an average of 6.0 runs per game. Conversely, the Phillies are 0-3 SU with a minus-6.0 average run margin in their last three road outings.
The Braves are struggling at home while the Phillies are having a tough time winning on the road.
As the Braves look for their third straight win, RHP Reynaldo Lopez draws the start tonight. The first-time MLB All-Star has been terrific this season, pitching to a career-best 2.06 ERA through 19 starts.
Nevertheless, Lopez’s play was shaky at best before landing on the injured list with a forearm injury. He’s surrendered seven earned runs on 21 hits in his last three starts, resulting in a 4.20 ERA during that stretch. At the same time, he pitched six scoreless innings with six strikeouts in a 6-0 win over the Phillies just last month.
Meanwhile, NL Cy Young candidate Zack Wheeler is starting for Philadelphia. The Phillies ace has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but one of his last nine starts. He’s also pitched to a 2.54 ERA along the way while limiting opposing batters to a .192/.258/.330 slash line. That’s without mentioning how Wheeler is 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA and 48 strikeouts across 44 1/3 innings in his last seven starts against the Braves.
Does Phillies RHP Zack Wheeler have another strong start in store for the Braves?
After the Braves got the last laugh last month, I’m predicting a Phillies win today. Atlanta has been brutal at home lately and it’s hard to predict what we’ll see from Lopez on the mound. Wheeler has been as consistent as they come and there’s a reason why Philly is 6-3 SU across his last nine starts. It’ll be a close one, but I see the Phillies emerging victorious tonight.
As for the best game bet, I recommend backing the Phillies on the moneyline. Again, the Braves have been getting hammered at home and I don’t see that trend changing tonight. Atlanta has also only been the home underdog twice this season, which emphasizes just how good Philadelphia is.

Wheeler has done a good job at racking up strikeouts this season, amassing 162 Ks through his first 24 starts (148 2/3 innings). The two-time MLB All-Star has finished with the Over on this prop in exactly half of his starts thus far with six of those instances occurring in his last nine games alone. The Over is also 4-0 in his last four road appearances — a span where he averaged 7.8 Ks per outing. Additionally, Wheeler has made good on this prop in six of his last 10 matchups with the Braves.
Considering how Atlanta is averaging 11.3 strikeouts in its last eight home games, I predict big things from the Cy Young candidate.
