Orioles vs Mets Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/21)

Following their defeat in the series opener, the Orioles retaliated with a 9-5 win against the Mets on Tuesday. Baltimore’s Right-hand Pitcher, Dean Kremer, chalked up his sixth season win by striking out seven batters. Moreover, Right Fielder Anthony Santander drove the offense, striking his 37th home run in 2024.

It will be intriguing to observe whether Baltimore’s win yesterday marks the start of more positive outcomes. The Orioles have a balanced record in August with 9 wins and 9 losses straight up (SU), and they’ve only managed to secure back-to-back victories once in the past 10 days. Their poor 7-9 SU record in their last nine away games doesn’t add any optimism.

Conversely, the Mets aren’t exactly performing at their peak right now. They’ve lost seven out of their last 11 games, and a significant factor in this slump is their below-par average of just 3.8 runs per game during this period. This level of performance won’t be enough against the O’s, who have the third highest run average per game in the Majors.

That being said, Citi Field hasn’t provided a hospitable environment for visiting teams. The Orioles had suffered four straight losses in Queens prior to their victory last night, leaving the question of whether it was a one-off incident or not.

Will the Orioles experience more rare success in Queens?

Cole Irvin, Orioles LHP, will be in the spotlight as he makes his first start since June 30. The ex-2016 fifth-round pick was relocated to the bullpen in July, but his performance was disappointing, with a 9.00 ERA from allowing 14 earned runs and four home runs on 21 hits over merely 14 innings.

Furthermore, Irvin has a record of 2-2 and a 5.14 ERA in seven inter-league games this season, three of which he started.

RHP Sean Manaea’s recent performances for the Mets have been inconsistent at best. He conceded six runs across 10 innings in his last two starts, resulting in a 5.40 ERA. However, the native of Valparaiso, IN, has an impressive record of 5-0 and a 2.03 ERA in his last five home games. This highlights the significant boost he receives from the Citi Field crowd.

Can the Mets take advantage of Orioles LHP Cole Irvin’s struggles?

In a game that could go in either direction, I predict we’ll see a Mets victory today. Again, the Orioles have struggled to string together consecutive wins in recent weeks and Irvin’s play on the mound can’t be trusted. The Mets’ batters are talented enough to take advantage of the situation and another strong showing from Manaea will only seal the deal.

With that in mind, backing the Over on the 8-run total is the way to go. The Over is 12-6 in the Mets’ last 18 home games as well as 15-5 in the Orioles’ 20 previous road outings. Furthermore, Baltimore and New York have surpassed their projected total in 11 of the last 14 meetings, averaging a combined 11.5 runs per game.

Following the combined 14 runs from both sides on Tuesday, it’s expected that there will be a significant amount of offense this afternoon.

Best Orioles vs Mets MLB Player Prop (8/21)

As he’s set to make his return to the starting rotation, I’m taking the Over on Cole Irvin’s 2.5 earned runs (-127) as today’s best Orioles vs. Mets player prop.

The Over has an encouraging record of 7-2 in the last nine appearances of Irvin. This 30-year-old experienced pitcher had a dismal 8.72 ERA during this period and has conceded 15 earned runs in the span of 9 2/3 innings in his last three starts on the road. He is now set to face the Mets, who have the following rankings this season when it comes to facing pitchers who are left-handed:

  • Hits: 14th
  • Doubles: T-2nd
  • Home runs: T-7th
  • RBIs: 8th
  • Batting average: 9th
  • On-base %: 8th
  • Slugging %: 3rd

To put it another way, Irvin probably has a challenging day in store. Given his recent difficulties and the fact that he hasn’t been a game’s opening player for more than a month, betting on a high score today seems a sensible choice.
