Once we get to October, it won’t be surprising if one of these 65-win clubs is representing the American League in the World Series. According to Bovada, the Orioles currently own the second-best 2024 ALCS odds (+300) while the Guardians are right behind them in third (+500).

Having said that, this isn’t the first battle of the season between these championship contenders. Tonight’s opponents previously clashed at Camden Yards back at the end of June, resulting in Cleveland winning two of the three matchups in a close-fought series where every game was won by one or two runs. As a result, the Guardians are now 13-7 SU across their last 20 meetings with the O’s.

Conversely, the Orioles have won four of their last six trips to Progressive Field, holding the hosts to an average of 2.7 runs per game during that stretch.

As far as this season goes, both sides head into tonight’s tilt with a ton of momentum. The Orioles have won four of their last five games while putting up 7.8 runs per contest. Meanwhile, the Guardians are currently on a three-game winning streak that saw them outscore those opponents 17-7 on aggregate.

Both the Orioles and Guardians aren’t showing any signs of slowing down from their recent winning ways.

The Orioles were just in action last night, which could benefit the Guardians. After all, Cleveland has the second-best winning percentage in the Majors when playing on one day of rest (76.9%). Additionally, the club is also 3-0 SU when it has the rest advantage in 2024.

It still remains to be seen who’ll be pitching for the Orioles today, however, the recently acquired Trevor Rogers could be making his team debut. Rogers — who was acquired from the Miami Marlins at the trade deadline — hasn’t pitched since July 26, meaning he’s likely rested enough to start this evening. He’s 2-9 with a 4.53 ERA through 21 starts with the Marlins.

As for the Guardians, they’re turning back to RHP Ben Lively. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound hurler had a strong end to July, pitching to a 2.70 ERA with 15 strikeouts across 16 2/3 innings in his last three starts. Interestingly enough, today marks the first-ever time that Lively will face the Orioles despite debuting in 2017.

Will Guardians RHP Ben Lively produce a strong start against the Orioles tonight?

In a game that could go either way, I’m taking the Guardians to win at home. It’s hard to support the Orioles when their starting pitcher is up in the air, and even if it’s Rogers, it isn’t as if he’s been playing well this season. Meanwhile, Lively has begun to turn things around and I think the support from the Cleveland crowd will boost the Guardians to victory.

But no matter who wins, let’s back the Under on the 9.5-run total. Both sides have recently been involved in low-scoring affairs with the Under being 4-1 in the last five games against each other, averaging a combined 7.6 runs per game. The Under is also 5-2 in the Orioles’ last seven home games, as well as 3-0 in Lively’s latest three appearances.

While Lively has played well in his recent starts, let’s not forget that he owns a 4.50 ERA in his last five appearances. He now has to face a dangerous Orioles lineup that averages the third-most runs in the Majors. That’s without mentioning how they own a 62.5% winning percentage against righties this season while also ranking first in home runs, fifth in hits, and third in on-base + slugging percentage.

Given that the Orioles have scored six-plus runs in four of their last five games — including 10 just yesterday — I can see Lively being in some trouble this evening.
