Olympic Women’s Soccer, Sunday, July 28th, 2024 Best Bets

There are plenty of Olympic Women’s Soccer matches today as the 2nd round of group stage gets underway, but there are two in particular this afternoon that I will be turning my focus towards. Our host, France takes on Canada in Group A, while the United States take on Germany in Group B, both happening at 3:00pm Eastern today! So have no fear, instead of picking which match to cover, we will simply bring your our best bets in both matches!

France vs Canada

Starting with our hosts, France secured a 3-2 victory over Colombia in their first match. The French scored early, netting a goal in the 6th minute of the match and had extended their lead to 2-nil by the 18th minute. After that, they never looked back. France scored a 3rd time before the halftime whistle, and although they did slip up in the 2nd half, allowing 2 goals, one off a penalty, they covered the entire 90 minutes and secured 3 points to start their campaign. They face Canada who is coming off a win against New Zealand, but still find themselves in last place in the group.

Despite their win, Canada is still at -3 points in their group because of a point deduction that was thrust upon them. The defending gold medalists were caught using drones to spy on their opponent’s closed practices, and on Saturday FIFA handed down a 6 point penalty, as well as suspending head coach Bev Preistman for one year. With that in mind, Canada should be extra motivated to come out and win both remaining games to even have a shot at advancing, however they may just roll over, because that is a lot to come back from.

United States vs Germany

As for the United States, they shutout Zambia 3-0 in their opener, scoring all 3 goals in the first 25 minutes of the match. Zambia played with 10 players for the better part of the last hour, but the United States was already up 3 and looking to coast to victory. Today will likely be the match that decides the Group, as Germany handled business in their first match as well. Australia is not the opponent they once were, and the United States should be able to beat them as well. Point being, it’s all about today’s match.

As I said, Germany beat Australia 3-0 in their opener, but the Matildas did put up a bit of a fight. They won the possession battle and produced 5 corner kicks of their own, but only put 2 of their 8 shots on target, while 3 of the German’s 4 shots on target found the back of the net. Both squads know that this match will likely decide the group winner, and motivation will be at an all time high.

Personally, I thought the United States looked a little more prepped and ready than the Germans, however not scoring against a Zambia roster with 10 players could be a little concerning. Let’s dive into these matches and find our best bets!

Will Canada Find Motivation Following Point Deduction?

Kailen Sheridan has an arguable case for the best goalkeeper in Women’s soccer

Ultimately, this is my biggest question mark. Imagine you won the gold medal in your last Olympic campaign, and are looking to win it again. You open up with a win in your first match, but before you play again, your coach is suspended and your team has 6 points deducted for cheating. Now, you have to dig yourselves out of a six point hole, just to have a chance at advancing. For lack of a better term, that would absolutely suck, and it makes me question the motivation on Canada’s sideline. Obviously they are professionals, but we’ve talked before about the Olympics not being the pinnacle of professional soccer. Teams and countries care more about the World Cup and EUROs, so why bother at this competition?

Although that could be a “lazy” way of capping this game, France looked very dominating, motivated, and playing at home makes it all the easier as well. I think France ultimately wins this match and solidifies themselves as the Group A leaders. I’ll back them on the spread and lay some juice for push potential.

Two Goliaths Face Off in Marseille

After a disappointing World Cup, can the USWNT go for Gold in Paris?

Germany and the United States currently rank 4th and 5th in the FIFA World Rankings, and they face off today in what will most likely decide Group B. In November of 2022, these teams played two friendlies against each other just 4 days apart. Germany won 2-1 first, but the United States secured a 2-1 victory just a few days later. Today, I think we see a very hard fought match, with both sides unofficially agreeing that a draw is fine, as long as they both walk away with some sort of points.

All Eyes on the Prize

Since the World Cup in 2023, the German national team has taken plenty of time off, with virtually zero friendly matches since that tournament. On the United States side, they have competed in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the SheBelieves Cup, as well as many friendlies this summer in preparation for this Olympic run. Point being, I think the United States is slightly more prepared than the Germans, and I think that could come into play today.

I see this game being very aggressive, with plenty of offensive chances, but I trust the keepers and back lines to hold strong. The USWNT backline is fairly solidified across the back, with veteran Crystal Dunn helping Naomi Girma, Tierna Davidson and Emily Fox find their groove. Veteran goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is also a booming voice that commands attention. While I do see both offenses having their time in the spotlight, I see the focus of this game being on defense and preventing high danger chances from the opponent. Ultimately, I think we see a 1-0 or 2-0 win for the United States, or a 1-1 draw. For this reason, I will be betting the Under 2.5 at (-110).
