Before mid-May of this year, the biggest win of Xander Schauffele’s career was capturing the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Now, after winning two majors, Schauffele will attempt to defend his Olympic men’s golf gold at Paris 2024.

When Schauffele won golf in Tokyo, it was his first tournament win of any kind in over two and a half years. Entering this year’s PGA Championship, he was on another extended winless run, having not won since the Genesis Scottish Open in July 2022.

At Valhalla, he ended his drought and claimed his first major title. And after making his long-awaited major championship breakthrough, it didn’t take him long to get his second one. Earlier this month, he won the Open Championship at Royal St. George in Scotland. That victory made him the first golfer to win two majors in one year since Brooks Koepka did it in 2018.

Schauffele’s two major titles have added some intrigue to the PGA Tour Player of the Year race, which appeared to be a runaway for world number one Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler has six wins in 2024, including the Masters in April, as well as the Players Championship and four signature event victories.

In addition to being the top two favorites for PGA Tour Player of the Year, Scheffler and Schauffele are the top two players in the world rankings and the top two favorites to win the Olympic men’s golf tournament.

Sixty players are taking part in the Olympic men’s golf tournament. The field is set by the International Golf Federation rankings. The top 15 players in those rankings, with a limit of four players per National Olympic committee, qualify for the tournament. For the other 45 players, there is a limit of two players per NOC. The field must include at least one player from the Olympic host nation and each geographical region.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the Olympic Men’s Golf Tournament?

Scottie Scheffler (USA) +400

Scheffler is in the midst of one of the best seasons in recent PGA Tour history, with six wins, ten top-five finishes, and 14 top-ten finishes in 16 events. All six of those wins have come in his last 11 events. If he isn’t at or near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, it will be a surprise.

In 18 PGA Tour events this season, Schauffele has his two major wins, seven top-five finishes, and a dozen top-ten finishes. He finished in the top ten in all four majors, and he finished tied for second at the Players Championship.

Rory McIlroy (Ireland) +900

McIlroy surprisingly missed the cut at the Open Championship, shooting 11-over (78-75) in his two rounds at Royal St. George. But in the seven tournaments prior to that disappointing performance, he had two wins (the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship) and four top-five finishes, including an agonizing runner-up finish at the U.S. Open in June.

Jon Rahm (Spain) +1000

Rahm heads into the Olympic men’s golf tournament after following his best major finish of the year (tied for seventh at the Open Championship) with his first individual LIV Golf win, a one-shot win at last week’s LIV Golf United Kingdom event.

Collin Morikawa (USA) +1100

Morikawa doesn’t have a win to his name this year and hasn’t won an official tournament since winning the DP World Tour Championship in November 2021.

But he has been in strong form over the last few months, with five top-four finishes and ten straight finishes 16^th or better in his last ten individual tournaments (which includes all four majors).

At the Tokyo Olympics, Morikawa and C.T. Pan were the final two players standing in a seven-man playoff for bronze, with Morikawa losing out on the fourth extra hole.

Ludwig Aberg (Sweden) +1600

Aberg has yet to win this year on the PGA Tour, but he has moved into fourth in the Official Golf World Ranking behind Scheffler, Schauffele, and McIlroy. The highlight of his year was a runner-up finish at the Masters, where he was the only other player besides Scheffler to finish 5-under par or better.

Olympic Men’s Golf Tournament Winner Pick: Collin Morikawa (+1100)

Three years ago, Morikawa came up just short of a medal, but I don’t think he will go home empty-handed this time around. He has been knocking on the door this year, and I really like his chances to break through it this week.

Tom Kim to finish in the top ten (+190)

In last year’s Open de France at this course, Kim finished tied for sixth. I think that prior experience will prove to be valuable for him this week.

Matthieu Pavon to finish in the top 20 (+135)

Pavon and Victor Perez are France’s representatives in the Olympic men’s golf tournament, and I’m going with Pavon to post a decent finish.

Since starting his first full PGA Tour season with a victory (the Farmers Insurance Open) and three top-ten finishes in his first four events, Pavon has not had many good results.

But he has lifted his game for some notable events, finishing fifth at the U.S. Open, tying for 12^th at the Masters, and tying for 16^th at the Travelers Championship. I think representing his country at home in the Olympics will help bring out his best this week.

Thorbjorn Olesen to finish in the top 20 (+175)

This is another spot where I like experience to factor in. Olesen, an eight-time DP World Tour winner, is very familiar with Le Golf National. And of the Olympic men’s golf participants who played in last year’s Open de France, the Dane had the second-best finish behind Kim, as he tied for 10^th.
