NFC South Division History

All four teams have had their hands on the division over the past decade, but this year it could be up in the air. Much like the AFC East, I see this being a three team race, with the Panthers more than likely finishing last again. What’s interesting to me is that a sub .500 record has won the division twice in the past decade. Will that be the case this year as well?

As the odds suggest, Vegas thinks this will be a three horse race, with the Falcons as the slight favorite. After signing Kirk Cousins and drafting Michael Penix Jr, they now have a solid QB to utilize their skill positions. Let’s take a look at each of these squads individually!
NFC South 2024 Team Previews
Can Bryce Young bounce back in his sophomore season?
Carolina Panthers
Former #1 overall pick Bryce Young leads the Panthers after a tough rookie season, but he has some new help this year. The Panthers sincerely upgraded their WR room by signing Diontae Johnson and drafting rookie Xavier Legette who should make an immediate impact. These two join Adam Thielen and Jonathan Mingo to round out the receiving core. Carolina is trusting their QB and hoping Young can pan out to be the stud he was in college. This will be a tough division to do that in, as he faces tough defenses nearly every week.
As for the Panthers defense, it isn’t anything to write home about. Jadeveon Clowney and Shaq Thompson are a solid LB core, but the rest of the squad needs some work. Carolina’s offense was dead last in scoring and yards last year, and their defense wasn’t much better. Defensively, the Panthers were actually top 5 in yards per game but ranked 28th in points allowed, giving up over 24 per game. This season Carolina will need to score plenty to win, and I simply don’t see it happening.
Can the Saints utilize their weapons and make a run at the NFC South?
New Orleans Saints
The Saints used to to top the NFC South frequently, but haven’t done so in a few years. Derek Carr leads the offense yet again, but he may be running for his life as this OL needs plenty of help. New Orleans drafted two Offensive Linemen, including Taliese Fuaga as their 14th overall pick, but Carr likely won’t have much time in the pocket. Lucky for him, he’s got some speedy help in Kamara, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. While I see more issues in the offense than the defense, I see New Orleans going as far as Carr can take them.
We know defense wins championships, but the Saints would be a prime example of the opposite. Could Carr develop some Drew Brees Bayou Magic and play out of his mind this season?
Defensively, the Saints are stacked with big names. Cam Jordan and Khalen Saunders control the trenches, Demario Davis and newcomer Willie Gay will handled the middle of the defense, while Tyrann Mathieu and Marshon Lattimore handle the secondary. On paper, absolutely incredible. But we will see if it translates on to the football field.
Can Mayfield and the Bucs win the NFC South again?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The three time defending NFC South champions just resigned their stud WR and have plenty of momentum going into this season. The Bucs upset the Eagles big time in the playoffs and have high hopes for this year. The offense relatively stays the same, aside from rookie Jalen McMillan joining Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as the WR3. Cade Otton and Rachaad White round out the skill positions, and with Baker’s ability to lead a rag tag bunch, this Bucs team could win the division again.
As for the defense, they are rock solid. While they allowed plenty of yards, their defense ranked 7th in the NFL in scoring, 9th in the turnover battle and they only got better. Tampa Bay signed SS Jordan Whitehead from the New York Jets, and he immediately makes the safety duo of him and Antoine Winfield very dangerous. Even with the new pieces in Atlanta, I still think the Buccaneers are the team to beat in the division, and if someone gave me a free unit, I would put it on the Bucs at +310.
Can London breakout this year with a solid Quarterback in Atlanta?
Atlanta Falcons
After signing Kirk Cousins in the offseason, the Falcons surprised everyone by drafting QB Michael Penix Jr with the 8th overall pick. It seem the Falcons signed both their short term and long term quarterbacks just months apart, and I think it could be a great move. For too long, Atlanta has had solid skill players, a decent defense, but no quarterback at all. Consider their biggest problem solved as Cousins looks to lead Atlanta to an NFC South title. With weapons like Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pits, there is no reason the Falcons offense can’t be dangerous.
Defensively, they really aren’t all that bad, but it will surely be a matter of how the rest of the division stacks up. While the Falcons are the odds-on favorite to win the NFC South, this is certainly anyone’s game. The Buccaneers and Saints both have offenses and defenses that can compete, and if all three teams get 2 free wins against the Panthers, the rest of the time could
