Liberty vs Lynx Prediction & Picks (5/25): Will New York Bounce Back at Minnesota?

The Target Center in Minneapolis may have hosted its final NBA game of the season last night, but the WNBA season is just beginning to heat up. Today, Napheesa Collier and the Lynx are set to go head-to-head with former UConn teammate Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty in an afternoon game that promises to be captivating (1:00 pm ET, CBS).

After unexpectedly experiencing their first season loss on Thursday, the Liberty (4-1) is set to bounce back. Despite being favored to win by more than two touchdowns against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky at home, they instead went down 90-81.

The Lynx (2-1) also experienced their initial defeat of the season on Thursday. However, the impact of their loss was not as significant as that of New York’s. Despite having multiple opportunities to win during their away game against the Connecticut Sun and even leading by five points in overtime, two late free throws allowed the home team to secure an 83-82 victory.

In the previous season, all three encounters between the Liberty and Lynx saw the visiting team emerge victorious. Could this afternoon’s match produce the same outcome? The odds are leaning towards New York, with a significant lead, but Minnesota’s performance this season has been commendable thus far.

New York Liberty vs Minnesota Lynx Betting Analysis

Does New York’s loss to Chicago imply anything?

Over the course of a lengthy season, setbacks and off nights are inevitable. However, the Liberty did not perform optimally on the offensive side, managing a shooting rate of just 43.5%. Stewart had a below-par game, making only 5 out of 12 field shots and 2 out of 6 three-pointers. Similarly, Sabrina Ionescu only managed 8 successful attempts out of 20 and scored from just two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.

On the defensive end, the Liberty gave up 11 offensive rebounds and the Sky took 75 shots, successfully making 46.7% of them. This includes a 36.8% success rate from the three-point line. These percentages represent the worst defensive performance of the season for New York.

This afternoon’s game could be a difficult one for New York, considering Minnesota’s recent performance. Even though Minnesota lost to Connecticut last Thursday, it’s worth mentioning that they were just moments away from winning at Mohegan Sun Arena. This is despite only making 4 out of 21 three-point attempts, a mere 19.0%, and having Alanna Smith play only 23 minutes before fouling out with 2:43 remaining in regulation.

The Lynx, having been among the weakest defensive teams in the WNBA last season, have shown significant improvements early this season. The question remains, can they sustain this for the rest of the season? While it’s too soon to tell, it’s certain that the Liberty will face a tough challenge today, even if they manage to secure a win at the Target Center.
