New York Jets vs San Francisco 49ers, NFL Predictions & Best Bets: Monday Night Football Returns (9/9)

Monday Night Football has once again returned to its regularly scheduled programming tonight as the San Francisco 49ers, the Super Bowl Runner Ups, host Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets as he makes his long awaited debut for a different team in green. Yes, I know he technically played last season, but tonight we will truly be able to see if Rodgers can still be a top tier quarterback in the National Football League. Sure, we know what he was capable of in Green Bay, but the 40 year old QB hasn’t played a real football game in quite some time.

Now, he is surrounded by some weapons, as the youngsters of Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson make this Jets offense worth talking about. Add in Mike Williams (if he can avoid injury), and youngsters Xavier Gibson and Malachi Corley, Rodgers has plenty of options to spread the ball around. And on the defensive side of things, the Jets should be near the top of the NFL. Last season they ranked 3rd in yards allowed per game, but slipped out of the Top 10 in points allowed. Still, they are led by great players on all 3 levels in Quinnen Williams, C.J. Mosley, and Sauce Gardner, and the supporting staff around them is ready to roll into enemy territory and try to shut down an offense that made it to the Super Bowl last season.

49ers Offense Still Intact

Brock Purdy leads the 49ers offense this season and despite trade rumors and holdouts, he returns all of his weapons from last season. The Avengers are once again assembling as CMC, Deebo and Kittle welcome back Brandon Aiyuk with open arms despite his potential departure this past offseason. All-Pro Left Tackle, Trent Williams also was involved in a holdout this offseason, but ended up reporting to camp, and should be good to go tonight. However no preseason snaps could always come into play.

As far as the defense goes, their pass rush will see an improvement by adding Leonard Floyd who put up double digits sacks last season in Buffalo. Fred Warner still commands the middle, but he will be without fellow LB Drew Greenlaw tonight who is still dealing with an achilles injury. Being at home will certainly help the third ranked defense in points per game allowed last season, and the fact that they face a QB in his 40s.

Will Rodgers look like his old self tonight near his hometown? Or will the 49ers defense spoil his homecoming on Monday Night?

Purdy and Company Return to the Field on MNF

Can Purdy and the 49ers shake off the Super Bowl loss and win Week 1 at home?

The 49ers had quite the offseason filled with plenty of contract disputes and trade rumors, specifically centered around Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams. However, low and behold everything worked out, and both players returned to practice in time for the first game of the season. However we have seen plenty of players have a rusty Week 1 game after not taking a single snap int he preseason. This narrative may be centered around quarterbacks, but I’m sure it reigns true with position players as well. If this is the case, I could certainly see the 49ers offense struggling to move the ball, especially considering they will be facing a ruthless Jets defense that is hungry to lead their team.

Will We Stale Offensive Starts?

I think we see some rust out of the Jets offense as well. We simply won’t be sure what Rodgers’ body is capable of doing until we see it on the football field tonight. Yes, the Jets have set him up for success, but he still hasn’t played more than a snap of real football since January of 2023. Personally I think he could be in for a rude awakening on the road against a 49ers D-Line that produced 2.7 sacks per game last season and got even better this season.

New York was 10-7 to the under last season, and I think this game tonight is set up perfectly for that. Both of these defenses are more than capable of disrupting their opponent’s offense and forcing punts. I think we see tons of defensive stops tonight on 3rd down, and not very many red zone trips for either team. Like I mentioned earlier, I do not see both teams reaching the 20s tonight, as I see it being a very low scoring affair tonight.

Be sure to due your line shopping as we actually took this at 44 earlier this week, but I don’t necessarily see both teams getting into the 20s tonight. I’ve seen plenty of love on the Jets to cover, and while I do lean this way, I am much more confident in the under, especially considering I like San Francisco to find a way to win this ball game. Going on the road and winning on Primetime is hard to do and it shows with both home teams winning in our two standalone night games so far this NFL season.

In my eyes, there are too many question marks surrounding Rodgers and how he plays, and I think the Jets offense is solely reliable on his arm. Breece Hall can only do so much behind his O-line, and Wilson and company will need Rodgers to be a true marksman trying to sneak passes in between the 49ers secondary. Ultimately, I think we see a hard nosed, gritty ball game that is highlighted by both teams’ defense. Give me Jake Moody to kick a game winning field goal as time expires, as the 49ers win this game 20-17.
