Tonight’s collision marks the beginning of the second Mets vs. Diamondbacks series this season. The two NL clubs split a four-game encounter at Citi Field nearly three months ago and things were close as three matchups were decided by just one run.

The Mets have gotten the better of the Diamondbacks more often than not in recent years, though, winning nine of the last 12 encounters between these teams. Additionally, that includes New York winning six of its seven previous trips to Chase Field.

Having said that, Arizona shouldn’t be underestimated. The Diamondbacks are baseball’s hottest team since the All-Star Break, boasting an MLB-best 76.5% winning percentage (26-8 SU) since July 19. They’ve also won each of their last six games while outscoring those opponents by an average of 3.7 runs per outing.

Meanwhile, the Mets are just 13-15 SU across their last 28 outings, which includes losing five of their seven previous road games.

The Diamondbacks have been on fire at home whereas the Mets are struggling on the road.

The Mets will be starting right-handed veteran Sean Manaea today. On one hand, the 32-year-old righty is a respectable 9-5 with a 3.48 ERA through 25 starts this season. On the other hand, Manaea’s play has been shaky lately, proven by a 4.76 ERA in his last three starts.

Additionally, Manaea surrendered five runs on six hits in a 10-5 loss to Arizona back on June 1.

Meanwhile, Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez has played well ever since a shoulder injury delayed his 2024 debut to August. His most recent start was his best thus far as he struck out five batters with one run allowed across 5 1/3 innings in a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins last Tuesday.

The Mets are one of the better teams when it comes to facing left-handed pitchers, though, leaving time to tell if Rodriguez has what it takes to take down Carlos Mendoza’s club.

In a matchup that oddsmakers see going either way, I’m taking the Diamondbacks tonight. Not only is Arizona the hottest team in the Majors, but it also won its last two encounters with New York. This showdown could come down to the wire, however, it’s best not to bet against the D-backs until given a reason not to.

Having said that, taking the Over on the 8.5-run total is a no-brainer. The Diamondbacks have been involved in high-scoring affairs lately, proven by the Over being 12-6 in their last 18 NL matchups as well as 5-2 in their last seven outings overall (11.9 total runs per game). Considering how the last three New York-Arizona tilts finished with the Over while averaging 14.3 total runs, expecting a lot of offense is the correct call.
