Tonight’s showdown means different things to the two sides involved. For the Dodgers, they have the opportunity to solidify their eight-game lead atop the NL West. Meanwhile, the Giants sit 11 games behind them and are currently three games back of the New York Mets for the National League’s final wild-card playoff spot.

Having said that, these long-time rivals have been trending in opposite directions lately. While the Giants are an uninspiring 4-7 SU across their last 11 outings, the Dodgers are searching for a fourth consecutive win after sweeping the Boston Red Sox while outscoring them 20-13 on aggregate.

The Dodgers also have the benefit of playing at Dodgers Stadium, where they’re 5-1 SU across their last six home games. Conversely, the Giants have dropped 11 of their last 14 road games — including four of the last five — ahead of tonight’s tilt.

Speaking of which, this evening’s game marks the 10th Giants-Dodgers game of the 2024 MLB season. L.A. has had the upper hand more often than not thus far, winning six of the first nine meetings.

Whether it’s in 2024 or a past season, the Dodgers tend to have the Giants’ number.

If the Giants want to turn things around, Blake Snell must keep up his recently solid play. After pitching to a putrid 9.51 ERA through his first six starts, the veteran left-handed starter has turned things around. He’s struck out 11 batters while giving up two hits without a run across 12 innings in his last two starts.

At the same time, the Dodgers are a whopping 25-10 SU against left-handed pitchers this season.

As for the L.A., former 2021 11th-round pick River Ryan is set to make his MLB debut tonight. The Charlotte, NC native earned the opportunity after recording a 2.22 ERA and 1.027 WHIP in eight starts across three minor-league levels this season.

Even though Ryan will likely be dealing with a ton of nerves, he can rest easy knowing that the Giants only averaged 3.3 runs in their eight previous road games.

Will the Dodgers’ success vs. lefties continue against Giants LHP Blake Snell tonight?

Based on how the season series between these teams has gone, I’m taking the Dodgers to win. L.A. is finally looking like itself again after sweeping the Red Sox and a promising matchup against the slumping Giants should help extend that momentum. As long as Ryan doesn’t implode on the mound, the Dodgers should walk out with the win.

Additionally, I suggest taking the Over on the 8.5-run total. After all, the Over is 8-1 in the first nine Giants-Dodgers games of the 2024 campaign, averaging a combined total of 11.0 runs per game. Each of those instances saw at least nine runs scored with the last two meetings finishing with 21 and 14.

With Snell being unpredictable while Ryan has yet to taste MLB action, there’s a good chance that we see some fireworks tonight.

Since the beginning of July, the two-time MLB All-Star is slashing .339/.400/.509 while racking up 20 hits, two doubles, and a pair of home runs. He’s also amassed 30 total bases across 15 games during that stretch (2.0 TBs per game), finishing with the Over nine times — including in each of his last four outings.
