2024 French Open Men’s Singles Odds & Favorites: Don’t Look Beyond the Big Names

Despite the unwelcoming weather, the French Open men’s and women’s singles draws have been narrowed down to 32 players each. The third round of the tournament is scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Of the 32 seeded players in men’s singles, 21 are still in play, including the top 15 seeds. In the third round, six matches will occur between these seeded players, which will result in some of the more prominent names in the draw starting to leave from today.

At the moment, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev are still performing well. Sinner will be facing Pavel Kotov and Alcaraz will be playing against #27 Seb Korda today. Meanwhile, Djokovic is set to compete against #30 Lorenzo Musetti and Medvedev will take on Tomas Machac tomorrow.

Korda is one of the four remaining Americans in the field, all of whom have been seeded. The remaining American participants include Taylor Fritz (#12 seed), Tommy Paul (#14 seed), and Ben Shelton (#15 seed). Unfortunately, Frances Tiafoe, who was the #25 seed, was defeated yesterday by Denis Shapovalov. Shapovalov is currently working on improving his rankings after a knee injury caused him to miss several months last year.

Since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win, no American male player has claimed a Grand Slam singles title. Is there a chance this could change in the current tournament? The possibility seems slim, particularly given that the trophy is expected to be clinched by one of the big names or top seeds.

Let’s take a look at the odds of winning the tournament before we delve into the favorites for the men’s singles at the French Open.

2024 French Open Men’s Singles Favorites

Carlos Alcaraz (+240)

Alcaraz’s preparation for the French Open was hampered by a right forearm injury. This restricted him to participating in only one tournament, the Madrid Open, during the clay swing in April and May. Despite being the two-time defending champion, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

It appears that he has overcome his injury, starting the tournament with a straight-sets victory against American JJ Wolf and a four-set triumph over qualifier Jesper de Jong. Although De Jong provided a tougher challenge than anticipated, it could assist in honing his focus and game for the more rigorous challenges ahead.

Jannik Sinner (+375)

Ever since his second-round upset by Daniel Altmaier in last year’s French Open, Sinner can arguably be considered the best player in the world.

Alcaraz had a similar limited preparation for the French Open. He made it to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters, but had to withdraw from his next match against Felix Auger-Aliassime due to a hip injury. He didn’t return to play until the first round of the French Open, where he defeated Christopher Eubanks.

From his straight-sets victories over Eubanks and Richard Gasquet, it appears that he’s ready to go. However, the last encounter with Kotov resulted in a worsened hip injury that impeded his preparation for Roland Garros.

This could be a significant few days for the Italian, provided the hip issue doesn’t worsen.

Following his victory in the Australian Open, Sinner has a chance to become the new world number one next week, having already won two out of two 2024 Grand Slam tournaments. He will ascend to the top position even if Djokovic claims the title, so long as he makes it to the final.

Novak Djokovic (+400)

Djokovic, the defending French Open men’s singles champion, should be viewed as the main contender until he is defeated, despite Alcaraz and Sinner being the favorites according to the odds.

Is that likely to occur? It can be confidently stated that he will not relinquish his title or his top ranking without a struggle.
