The last time that Canada made the semifinals of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, current NBA players were not a part of the event. Today, they can bring that streak to an end by eliminating host country France in the quarterfinals (12:00 pm ET, E!).
Canada was tasked with navigating a Group A that also included Australia, Greece, and Spain, and they swept through the group.
France, meanwhile, finished second in Group B with wins over Brazil and Japan and a loss to Germany. That was more than enough to lock up a spot in the last eight, but it wasn’t a showing that would have ignited a wealth of positivity, especially when stacked up with the performances other gold medal hopefuls have had.
Will they regroup from Friday’s stinker against Germany and deliver a dazzling display to down Canada? Or is a historic place in the medal round in the cards for Canada?

France vs Canada Betting Analysis
Is an earlier than expected elimination ahead for France?
Based on their performances in the group stage, there’s a lot that needs to happen for that to not be the case.
In their opener against Brazil, they were behind by a dozen in the first half, and though they rallied to win by that same margin, their 78-66 win wouldn’t have moved the needle at all.
Neither did their four-point overtime win over Japan. They were on the verge of a momentous upset loss, but a late four-point play by Matthew Strazel helped force the extra period, where they were able to escape with victory.
Given the first two performances by France, the writing was perhaps on the wall for Friday’s first-place matchup with Germany. It was not a contest after the first quarter, and Germany led by as many as 24 in their 85-71 win.
Now, it must be said that Germany has been extremely impressive and is showing that last year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup win was no fluke.
But France did not show up in group action, and there is no skirting that.
However, of the two first-place teams that they could have faced had things fallen a different way, Canada is a more favorable matchup than the USA would have been.
Canada did win to make it through Group A unscathed, but there were no big routs on their run. They tried to give the game away against both Greece and Spain, and they needed a strong second half against Australia to avert a budding scare.

France vs Canada Prediction & Picks
Neither team played up to potential in the group stage, but there’s a lot more positives for Canada than for France, and not just because they posted a perfect record in the toughest group.
Ultimately, writing off France is a dangerous thing to do, because if they show up, they can hang with and beat Canada. However, that “if” is doing some rather heavy lifting right now.
There is a lot of pressure on both sides in this matchup. France is trying to make a historic run to gold as the host country, while Canada is trying to ride its most talented team ever to a first Olympic men’s basketball gold.
I think that pressure will come into play in this one, and though I do have Canada taking the win and moving on to the medal round, I don’t think they will be able to put France away until late.
Will the trend of higher scoring in the first half continue? In the first quarterfinal of the day between Germany and Greece, the first half won out for the 12th time in 13 games at the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, and at the time of writing, Serbia and Australia have combined for 96 first-half points in the second quarterfinal.
There is no value in that play here (at odds of -204 at Bovada), but there is with taking the first quarter to be the highest-scoring quarter. It was the highest-scoring quarter in all of France’s group games and in two of Canada’s group games.
France vs Canada Prediction: Canada to win
France vs Canada Picks: 1) France +8, 2) Dillon Brooks over 12.5 points (-105 at Bovada), 3) first quarter to be the highest scoring quarter (+250 at Bovada)
