Through the first eight races of the 2024 Formula 1 season, there has already been more parity than last season, even though Max Verstappen remains almost certain to win yet another world championship. Will that parity continue with this afternoon’s Canadian Grand Prix?
Two weeks ago, Verstappen’s run of nine consecutive poles ended at the Monaco Grand Prix, as Charles Leclerc topped the charts in qualification. Leclerc then went on to win his home race for the first time, breaking a run of rotten luck both in Monaco and as a polesitter.
Verstappen, who started and finished sixth, is 31 points ahead of Leclerc in the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship standings and has won five races this season. But with Leclerc’s home heroics at Monaco, more drivers have already won a race this season (four – Verstappen, Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Carlos Sainz Jr.) than last season (Verstappen, Sainz, and Sergio Perez) in 14 fewer races.
Will that number increase today? For the second straight race, Verstappen will not start on pole. He was beaten out by George Russell, who claimed the second pole of his Formula 1 career. The two drivers extraordinarily finished with the same time, but due to Russell having set the time (1:12.000) first, he earned pole position.
Still, even though Verstappen was unable to begin a new pole streak, he is the favorite to win the Canadian Grand Prix, as per this morning’s odds.

Canadian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks
If you like to bet on Formula 1, the best thing for betting value and options is for Verstappen to not start on pole.
Monaco wasn’t somewhere that this could be taken advantage of fully, given how difficult it is to make a move through the field, but today could be one of the better betting days of the Formula 1 season for neutrals.
Russell may be starting on pole, but the odds of him delivering his and Mercedes’ first win since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix are low. Whereas Verstappen was in an unfavorable position at Monaco, that is not the case for today’s race. So, there may never be a better time this season to hammer Verstappen race winner odds.
Even if Russell is unable to claim his second career win, it could still be a very positive day for the Briton. The Silver Arrows have been significantly outpaced by Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, but Russell’s effort shows that there’s something to work with.
Lando Norris, who will start third, and has four podiums in his last six races, has better odds to finish second, coming in at -120 to Russell’s +120. There’s value with either, but I’m taking the optimistic view on Russell.
Lastly, this isn’t a high-value play, but Formula 1’s Canadian competitor should have one of his better days of the season. Lance Stroll has finished in the top ten in four of five career starts in his home race, and he is -180 to make it five of six today. Stroll will start ninth, three spots behind Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso.
