Formula 1 British Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Will the Brits Box Out Verstappen at Silverstone?

While Max Verstappen may be well on his way to yet another Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship crown, the 2024 F1 season has been anything but boring. Is more drama ahead in today’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone?

Late in last week’s Austrian Grand Prix, Verstappen and close friend/closest championship rival Lando Norris were engaged in a fierce battle for the lead. With eight laps remaining, the two made contact which ended Norris’s race, knocked Verstappen out of contention for the win, and opened the door for George Russell to swoop in and snatch his second career Formula 1 win.

Verstappen was adjudged to be at fault for the collision and received a ten-second penalty for his trouble, but he emerged from the controversy with his friendship with Norris very much intact, as fences were very quickly mended.

He also emerged from it with an even bigger championship lead, as the ten points he earned for his fifth-place finish put him 81 points ahead of Norris, who finished last and went home empty-handed.

2024 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 11 Races)

  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 237
  • Lando Norris (McLaren) – 156
  • Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 150
  • Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) – 135
  • Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 118
  • Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 112
  • George Russell (Mercedes) – 111
  • Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 85

This week, the action moves to the U.K. for the British Grand Prix, which Verstappen won for the first time last year.

Joining him on the podium at Silverstone were Norris and Hamilton, who owns a record eight British Grand Prix victories, three more than Jim Clark and Alain Prost.

There’s a good chance we will see significant British representation on the podium this year as well. Russell beat out Hamilton and Norris to claim pole position for the second time this season, while Verstappen will join Norris on the second row after edging Piastri for fourth.

Despite missing out on his ninth pole in 2024, Verstappen is still the British Grand Prix favorite. Odds at BetOnline put him just ahead of Norris, who is followed by the Mercedes men, who are looking for another positive weekend.

British Grand Prix Predictions & Picks

With Verstappen starting fourth and Norris, here is another opportunity to back him at odds that aren’t seen often.

But is he worth the investment, or should you direct your Formula 1 bets elsewhere?

There’s certainly a good argument for chucking at least a few bucks at Verstappen to win.

After all, he has still been a dominant force this season. But that dominance isn’t at the same level as last season, at least not at this point. It may take some work to beat the British contingent ahead of him, if he is even able to. Over the last several races, Norris has established himself as Verstappen’s closest challenger. Also, things appear to be trending up for Mercedes, who was headed for another solid week even before Russell ended up in the right place at the right time.

Can Hamilton finally win his first race since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix?

Since the race that shall not be mentioned, Hamilton has been chasing an elusive 104th career Formula 1 win. After finishing second five times in 2022 and three times in 2023, he has yet to finish better than third this season.

He is +150 for a top-two finish, but the better bet might be to back him for a top-three finish at -140 odds. Hamilton hasn’t finished outside of the top three in the British Grand Prix since a fourth-place finish in 2013, which is notable given his and Mercedes’ struggles post the race that shall not be mentioned.

An 11th straight British Grand Prix podium for Hamilton should be part of a double top-three day for Mercedes (+110 odds for that result).

Also worth a look at plus odds is a top-ten finish for Sergio Perez (+100). Perez will start 19th after spinning out in Q1, the latest frustration in a stretch of frustrations. But in 27 races since last year’s Monaco Grand Prix, Perez has finished at least tenth in all 23 races that he has completed.
