Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Is Another Verstappen & Norris 1-2 in the Cards?

In recent Formula 1 races, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris consistently finishing in the top two places has become usual. Will we see a repeat in the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix this Sunday?

Verstappen and Norris have occupied the top two podium spots in five out of the last six races. Verstappen has clinched the top spot four times out of these five, while Norris celebrated his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Miami Grand Prix last month.

It’s likely that we’ll see another 1-2 finish for Verstappen-Norris at the Red Bull Ring, given their first and second place finishes in qualifying. Verstappen, who hadn’t started on pole for the last three races, unsurprisingly took the top spot in Q3 with the best time, earning his eighth pole of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Norris came in second, while George Russell, Carlos Sainz Jr., and Lewis Hamilton also managed to complete Q3 in less than 65 seconds.

Starting Grid for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix

  1. Max Verstappen
  2. Lando Norris
  3. George Russell
  4. Carlos Sainz Jr.
  5. Lewis Hamilton
  6. Charles Leclerc
  7. Oscar Piastri
  8. Sergio Perez
  9. Esteban Ocon
  10. Nico Hulkenberg
  11. Daniel Ricciardo
  12. Kevin Magnussen
  13. Pierre Gasly
  14. Yuki Tsunoda
  15. Fernando Alonso
  16. Alexander Albon
  17. Lance Stroll
  18. Valtteri Bottas
  19. Logan Sargeant
  20. Guanyu Zhou

Verstappen further extended his substantial lead in points by winning the day’s sprint race. He was closely followed by Oscar Piastri, who outperformed his McLaren teammate Norris to secure second place.

Going into Sunday’s race, Verstappen has a 71-point lead over Norris, and Charles Leclerc is trailing by an additional six points.

Is he going to enter the upcoming British Grand Prix with an even larger lead? That’s what the indications suggest. Verstappen is strongly favored to win the Austrian Grand Prix, according to the odds, which would make it a record fifth victory for him and his eighth win in the 11 races of this season.

Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks

Verstappen’s failure to finish on pole at the Monaco Grand Prix, Canadian Grand Prix, and Spanish Grand Prix presented some lucrative opportunities. However, with him returning to his usual spot on the starting grid this weekend, those opportunities are no longer available.

In spite of this, there are still some worthy options. If you’re interested in betting on “Who will have the fastest lap at the Austrian Grand Prix?” Verstappen (+120) is a solid wager.

So far in the 2024 Formula 1 season, he has clocked the fastest lap only twice, during the Bahrain and Japanese Grand Prix. However, in his prior four victories at the Austrian Grand Prix, he had the fastest lap three times. He also held the fastest lap for the last three iterations of this race, including the 2022 edition won by Leclerc.

Recent Austrian Grand Prix Winners

  • 2023: Max Verstappen
  • 2022: Charles Leclerc
  • 2021: Max Verstappen
  • 2020: Valtteri Bottas
  • 2019: Max Verstappen
  • 2018: Max Verstappen
  • 2017: Valtteri Bottas
  • 2016: Lewis Hamilton
  • 2015: Nico Rosberg
  • 2014: Nico Rosberg

Beyond that, I only see one play of value to me – or two, technically, but they’re separate plays dependent on the same outcome, so they essentially count as one play.

Sergio Perez has not made it to the podium in five successive Formula 1 races. To break this streak at the Red Bull Ring, he will need to significantly advance from his starting position of eighth.

Achieving a top-six finish will require some effort, but I am optimistic about his odds. It would represent progress considering his last four races ended with him taking eighth, not finishing twice, and then eighth again. The odds for Perez to rank among the top six and for Red Bull to have two drivers in the top six are both +125, so you can opt for either or even both if you’re highly confident that Perez can break his recent streak of outcomes. If Perez were to fare poorly in his team’s home race, it wouldn’t reflect well on him. Therefore, advancing even by a few places would yield positive results for him and Formula 1 bettors.

If you’re interested in more action and don’t mind a little juice, consider betting on Hamilton (-140) to finish better than Leclerc (+110). Hamilton’s recent performance has been impressive, posting his two best results of the season in his last two races. He also achieved his first podium of 2024 last weekend in Spain. He will begin the Austrian Grand Prix in a favorable position, especially concerning this specific bet.
