For Lando Norris, the last three races on the Formula 1 calendar have all been a case of could have, should have, but didn’t. Will that be the case for him again in today’s Hungarian Grand Prix?
In the Spanish Grand Prix, Norris started on pole for only the second time in his F1 career. But he immediately lost the lead to Max Verstappen and wouldn’t regain it as he finished second behind the reigning world champion.
In the Austrian Grand Prix, the McLaren man put himself in position to potentially get by a struggling Verstappen late in the race, but the two collided, resulting in Norris failing to finish a race for the first time since last season’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Then at the British Grand Prix, Norris had an excellent chance to get his second win of the season, but he came out behind Lewis Hamilton following a pivotal pit stop and went on to finish third behind eventual winner Hamilton and runner-up Verstappen.
Had things gone Norris’s way in Austria and in one of the other two races, the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship standings would look drastically different. Instead, Verstappen has only increased his lead in each race and is 84 points clear of Norris at the halfway point of the season.
Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 12 of 24 Races)
- Max Verstappen – 255
- Lando Norris – 171
- Charles Leclerc – 150
- Carlos Sainz Jr. – 146
- Oscar Piastri – 124
- Sergio Perez – 118
- George Russell – 111
- Lewis Hamilton – 110
While Verstappen has been growing his championship lead, things are getting interesting with the World Constructors’ Championship race. Red Bull still hold a handy lead over Ferrari and McLaren, but Sergio Perez has failed to finish higher than seventh in any of his last six races. Ferrari remain in second despite some recent struggles, but McLaren’s recent rise sets up a very interesting second half of the season.
Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championship Standings (Through 12 of 24 Races)
- Red Bull – 373
- Ferrari – 302
- McLaren – 295
- Mercedes – 221
Today could be the day that McLaren and Ferrari swap places, and at the same time, things could tighten up significantly between them and Red Bull.
The McLaren duo of Norris and Piastri will occupy the first two spots on the Hungarian Grand Prix starting grid, and while Verstappen will fancy his chances of a win despite starting third, Perez will start 16th after another forgetful qualifying effort.
Can Norris make the most of pole position this time? He will enter the race as the favorite to win, according to Hungarian Grand Prix odds at BetOnline.

Hungarian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks
With seven wins, Verstappen is still well on his way to another Formula 1 title.
But Hamilton’s stunning victory at Silverstone made him the sixth different driver to win a race this season, just a week after teammate Russell became the fifth with his Austrian Grand Prix win.
Hamilton will start fifth in today’s race, but can he land on the podium for a third consecutive race? At +200 odds, I’ll happily back that possible outcome. He has finished fourth or better in four straight races, and I’m giving him the edge over Sainz (+185) here because I trust Mercedes more than Ferrari. With that in mind, Hamilton (-130) to finish ahead of Sainz (+100) also is a good shout, as is Hamilton (+240) to finish ahead of Piastri (-300).
Will his teammate have a better end today than he did at Silverstone? Russell, the British Grand Prix polesitter, was forced to retire from the race less than 20 laps from the finish, and his misfortune carried over into Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, as he failed to make it out of Q1.
But Norris had the 13th best time in Q1 before posting the quickest times in Q2 and Q3, so Russell’s qualifying pace isn’t indicative of what he may do today. It’s a lot of ground to make up, but I also like the value in him landing a top-six finish (+200).
My favorite Formula 1 bet for this race is for Hulkenberg (+155) to finish better than Ricciardo (-185). Ricciardo will start ninth while Hulkenberg will start 11th, but Hulkenberg has finished ahead of Ricciardo nine times in a dozen races.
But who will take the win in Hungary? Norris may be favored, but I can’t pass on Verstappen (+160) to finish ahead of Norris (-200) or for him to win at these odds.
