Diamondbacks vs Royals Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/23)

The Royals opened up this three-game series with a massive 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday. Bobby Witt Jr. was a single short of the cycle as he drove in three runs while Kansas City outscored Arizona 6-1 in the final six innings to take the series lead.

The success isn’t anything new for the Royals, who are now 8-2 in their last 10 games. Matt Quataro’s club has also won four games in a row ahead of tonight’s showdown, outscoring those foes by an average of 5.0 runs per game. Kansas City also has a 52.4% success rate against NL teams this season whereas Arizona has only defeated 43.3% of its AL opponents.

Having said that, we can’t ignore that the Diamondbacks are 6-3 SU in their last nine meetings with the Royals.

But even with that trend, it’s difficult to doubt the Royals, who are also 5-1 SU with a plus-3.3 average run margin in their last six home games.

Can the Diamondbacks put an end to the Royals’ hot streak at Kauffman Stadium?

Nevertheless, winning won’t be easy if Jordan Montgomery can’t give the Diamondbacks a solid start. The 2023 World Series-winning lefty has been getting destroyed on the mound, pitching to a 9.24 ERA after allowing 26 earned runs, 42 hits, and 11 walks in his last six starts (25 1/3 innings).

Things don’t look any promising when you realize that Montgomery is winless with a 5.74 ERA in three career starts against Kansas City.

Having said that, it isn’t as if Royals RHP Alec Marsh has been pitching gems. The former 2019 second-rounder is dealing with his own struggles after laying to a 6.93 ERA in his last six appearances. And while he’s won two of his last four home starts, his 5.06 ERA during that stretch reveals that he hasn’t exactly been living up to expectations.

In what should be a highly competitive matchup, I’m predicting a Royals victory. Kansas City is red-hot at the moment without showing signs of slowing down. The Diamondbacks have been solid, too, however, last night’s lopsided loss will affect them mentally. If Marsh has a strong outing, the Royals have what it takes to emerge victorious.

With that in mind, I’m taking Royals o4.5 total runs for my best team bet. The Diamondbacks tend to allow a ton of offense when Montgomery plays, surrendering an average of 7.5 runs in his last six appearances. Meanwhile, the Over is 3-1 in Kansas City’s four games since the All-Star Break and 7-3 in its last 10 games overall.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Royals’ bats should be productive tonight.

Since June 24, the Colleyville, TX native is slashing an absurd .452/.489/.821 while amassing six home runs, seven doubles, and three triples across 22 outings. Witt has also racked up 69 total bases in those contests (3.1 per game) while finishing with the Over in 15 matchups — including in each of his last four.
