Diamondbacks vs Guardians Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/6)

The Diamondbacks opened this series in a big way, notching a 7-6 win over the Guardians less than 24 hours ago. After Cleveland’s Bo Naylor tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, Arizona’s Eugenio Suarez drove in automatic runner Corbin Carroll at the top of the 10th frame before RHP Justin Martinez came in for his first save of the season.

With the win, the Diamondbacks remain one of the MLB’s hottest teams. Since the All-Star Break passed, Arizona ranks second in the Majors with a 12-4 SU record (750.0%). They haven’t lost back-to-back games in nearly a month and aren’t showing signs of slowing down.

Meanwhile, a lot of people are beginning to wonder what’s wrong with the Guardians. The AL Central leaders have now lost three games in a row while being outscored 23-15 along the way, highlighting their inability to stop the opposition’s bats. It doesn’t help that Cleveland has also dropped seven of its last 11 home games since mid-July.

Will the Guardians figure out a way to prevent their home struggles from continuing?

Last night’s results also mean that the Diamondbacks are now 8-3 SU in their last 11 matchups with the Guardians.

It’s also worth noting that Cleveland owns a 55.6% winning percentage in inter-league matchups in 2024, whereas Arizona has a 48.5% success rate in that regard.

Speaking of the D-backs, LHP Eduardo Rodriguez will make his season debut tonight. The 31-year-old-hurler — who’s been sidelined with a shoulder sprain — went 13-9 with a career-best 3.30 ERA in 26 starts with the Detroit Tigers last season.

Meanwhile, the Guardians are turning back to RHP Ben Lively, who’s played to some mixed results lately. On one hand, he’s pitched to a 2.78 ERA with 19 strikeouts in his last four starts. On the other hand, he only won two of those outings due to Cleveland only averaging 3.5 runs during that stretch.

Will Arizona’s batters be able to take advantage of Cleveland RHP Ben Lively’s recent inconsistencies?

I could see this game also going either way, but I’m taking the Diamondbacks to win. Arizona has been chugging along since the All-Star festivities ended and I wouldn’t be surprised if that momentum continues to build based on the team’s recent history against Cleveland. The Guardians’ home struggles only make me side with the visitors even more.

But no matter who’s the victor, I like the Over on the 8-run total. Heading into tonight’s tilt, the Over is 8-1 in the Diamondbacks’ last nine games (12.8 runs per game) and 5-0 in the Guardians’ last five (12.6 runs). The Over is also 5-2 in the last seven Arizona-Cleveland matchups, averaging a combined 10.6 runs along the way.

Marte has been playing like one of baseball’s best players since the MLB All-Star Break ended. In his last 13 games (50 at-bats), the former NLCS MVP is slashing .380/.411/.940 with 19 hits, nine HRs, and a double. He’s averaging 3.6 total bases during that stretch while finishing with the Over on this prop 10 times — including in his last two appearances.
