Diamondbacks vs Cubs Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/19)

As the 2024 campaign resumes, both of these teams are looking to improve their positioning in the National League playoff race.

Even though both clubs are on the outside looking in at the moment, making the playoffs is far from a long shot. The Diamondbacks are currently one game behind the New York Mets for the final NL wild card spot while the Cubs aren’t that much further back at 3.5 games. Having said that, there are another four clubs between them, showing just how spicy the NL playoff race is about to become.

The Diamondbacks did a good job at building momentum ahead of the All-Star break. They’re 10-5 SU across their last 15 games and even won four outings in a row before falling 8-7 to the Toronto Blue Jays in their most recent contests.

Conversely, the Cubs were also looking solid before the stoppage, winning eight of their final 11 outings. Some of those wins came against the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles, proving that Chicago shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The Diamondbacks are currently one of the hottest teams in the Majors.

The upcoming Diamondbacks vs. Cubs series is also the second of the 2024 season. The pair previously collided at Chase Field back in April as Chicago picked up two wins in a tight series where it only outscored Arizona 19-17 on aggregate.

Having said that, it’s been the Diamondbacks who’ve gotten the last laugh more often than not, going 10-4 SU across its last 14 meetings with the Cubs. That’s without mentioning how Arizona has also won six of its last eight trips to Wrigley Field while also being 9-6 SU against the NL Central this season.

The D-backs’ chances of victory could hinge on which version of Ryne Nelson takes the mound. Although the 26-year-old righty has struggled this season, he’s begun to turn things around with a 2.41 ERA across 18 2/3 innings in his last three appearances (2 starts).

Meanwhile, the Cubs hope to see more of the same from Justin Steele, who owns a 2.71 ERA through 14 starts. The All-Star southpaw also hasn’t lost a start since June 7, going 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA while striking out 38 batters in 42 innings in his last six starts.

Cubs LHP Justin Steele has been wheeling and dealing throughout the last month.

At the end of the day, I’m predicting a Cubs win this afternoon. Chicago is tough to beat whenever Steele is on the mound and he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. The Diamondbacks have been playing well, however, their 14-19 SU record against lefties this season has me leaning in the home team’s direction.

But regardless of who wins, I expect the Cubs to score over 3.5 runs. Chicago’s offense is rolling lately, averaging 5.5 runs in the last 11 games while finishing with four or more nine times. Not only has Arizona allowed the Over in five of its last seven games, but opponents are averaging 4.8 runs in Nelson’s last four starts.

Best Diamondbacks vs Cubs MLB Player Prop (7/19)

If you’re on the hunt for a Diamondbacks vs. Cubs player prop, I suggest taking the Under on Justin Steele’s 5.5-hit total (-117).

Steele has done a good job at limiting what his opponents have to work with this season. The former 2014 fifth-rounder has only allowed 40 hits in his last nine starts (4.4 per appearance), finishing with the Under on this prop six times — including in both of his last two appearances. He’s held opposing batters to a .180/.229/.248 slash line during that stretch while registering 58 strikeouts in 61 innings.

Considering how the Diamondbacks have been held to six or fewer hits in four of their last seven games, I don’t see Steele allowing much offense today.
