Today’s WNBA schedule concludes with a matchup between two teams who have had varying results in the absence of their key players. It appeared probable that the Mercury would struggle, particularly after ending last season with the WNBA’s worst record, due to Brittney Griner being benched due to a fractured toe.
Despite their season-opening loss to the Las Vegas Aces, the Mercury managed to perform well and have since won three consecutive games. These victories include a 98-88 triumph over the Aces in a rematch at the Michelob Ultra Arena on Tuesday.
The Mercury is currently thriving, while the Wings are finding it challenging without Satou Sabally, who is recovering from an offseason shoulder surgery. The ex-Oregon star might not return until post-Olympic break, and her absence is profoundly felt at the moment.
The season started with a home victory against the Chicago Sky, but they lost the subsequent rematch three days later. In their most recent game, they were defeated 83-78 by Atlanta on Tuesday.
The season is still in its early stages, so the current standing of some teams may not reflect their position when it reaches the crucial part of the season. However, a 1-3 start is not what the Wings had hoped for at this stage, making tonight’s game in Phoenix extremely significant.

While Griner is irreplaceable, the Mercury have admirably managed to fill the offensive and defensive gap her absence has left so far.
Last year, only two players from Mercury, Griner and Briana Turner, averaged four or more rebounds per game, both with 6.3 RPG. However, this season has seen a significant improvement with five players from Phoenix averaging a minimum of 4.8 RPG in the first four games, Natasha Mack leading the pack with 8.3 RPG.
The addition of Kahleah Copper might be the best offensive move of the offseason. In her most recent year with the Chicago Sky, Copper, who was the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP, recorded a career-high average of 18.7 points per game and her career-best three-point shooting percentage was 40.4%.
She may not maintain her current form, but she is set to significantly surpass the existing records. Last Saturday, she scored 38 points in a victory against the Atlanta Dream and added 37 more in Tuesday’s triumph over the Aces. She is currently averaging 28.5 points per game with a shooting percentage of 50.6% from the field, 46.7% from three-point range, and 87.0% from the free-throw line.
Moreover, the timeless Diana Taurasi continues to make significant contributions for Phoenix. In the season opener against the Aces, she scored 23 points, and she scored 20 in Phoenix’s 83-80 victory over the Washington Mystics on Thursday.
Although the Mercury have many reasons to be optimistic at present, the Wings are finding it hard to gain momentum.
Without Sabally, Dallas has to depend even more on Arike Ogunbowale to not only score a lot of points but also to do so accurately. In the last three games, she has scored 25, 35, and 24 points respectively. However, she has a shooting percentage of just 38.0% from the field and 32.1% from the three-point line, with an average of 23.7 field goal attempts and 9.3 three-point attempts per game.
Despite potentially having more success tonight against a Mercury team that ranks ninth in the WNBA in three-point defense, it may not be sufficient to avoid a third consecutive loss. In my opinion, I doubt it.
