The Semifinals of the Copa America 2024 have arrived with the first face-off tonight between two teams previously seen in the Group Stage – Argentina and Canada. Both teams, originally from Group A, emerged victorious from their Quarterfinals and are now set to clash once more. The winner will secure their place in the Title match. In the tournament’s opening match, Argentina defeated Canada 2-0. However, Canada gave a commendable performance, holding firm in the initial 45 minutes.
After winning their next two, Canada held on against Group B Winner, Venezuela, in the Quarterfinals, advancing on penalty kicks. Argentina has handled business in all 4 of their matches, and I don’t necessarily see that changing tonight. Congrats to Canada for making it here, but they are the clear outlier left in this Copa America, and I see it ending tonight.

Argentina Faces a Familiar Foe in the Semifinals
Emiliano Martinez has only conceded one goal in the four matches he has played in this Copa America.
As I mentioned, these teams kicked off the entire Copa America tournament, with Argentina securing a 2-0 victory with a pair of goals in the second half. Even though Argentina has not been dominating their opponents with 3-4 goal victories, they have consistently played strong soccer and have done what’s necessary to win every match and progress to the Quarterfinals.
What I find most remarkable is their defensive play. Argentina has only allowed 8 target shots and 12 corner kicks in the 4 matches they’ve played in this tournament so far. They’re effectively shutting down any scoring opportunities for their opponents, simplifying the task for Emi Martinez. If they continue with this strong defense, they could potentially win the tournament. Even if not, I don’t foresee any significant challenges for them in tonight’s match.
Although Canada has made it to the knockout round with 2 match wins, their offensive performance has been lacking. In their three group stage matches, they managed to make only 7 shots on target, despite having a man advantage for over an hour in two of these matches. In their game against Venezuela, they rallied to make 7 SOT but only one of these shots resulted in a goal. Without a stronger offensive strategy, Canada’s chances of progressing are uncertain.
The Copa America Tournament has decided against extra time. Any match that ends in a draw will proceed directly to penalty kicks after the 90-minute mark. Although Canada managed to hold its own against Argentina for 45 minutes in their initial encounter, I doubt a repeat performance. In my view, Canada will need to secure at least one goal to progress, given its propensity to concede. I predict a match with few goals. If I were part of the Canadian team, my strategy would be to aim for 90 minutes without any goals and hope to clinch a victory through penalties.

I anticipate aggressive play from Argentina right from the start, with numerous attempts on goal. I foresee them taking an early 1-0 lead and maintaining it till the end.
This could potentially end up as a 1-0 or 2-0 final, which is why I also support Argentina to Nil at (-110). Personally, I will support the Argentinians, who I believe will display extreme aggression and maintain dominance for the entire 90 minutes.
