A fortnight ago, the journey for a national championship began with 64 college baseball teams. Only eight of these teams have made it through, progressing to the 2024 College World Series. The final competition for the trophy will be a clash between the ACC and the SEC.
The NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament often sees a lot of upsets, and this year is no exception. However, this year has also been more favorable for favorites compared to most years.
The Omaha eight includes the top four national seeds which are #1 Tennessee, #2 Kentucky, #3 Texas A&M, and #4 North Carolina. It also includes #8 Florida State, #10 NC State, and #12 Virginia.
Despite not being one of the top 16 seeds in the 2024 CWS field, and having a record of 34-28, finishing 13-17 in their conference, and being a #3 seed in their regional, this team is far from being an underdog.
The Florida Gators, who were the national runner-up last year, had a rough regular season this year but still managed to secure a spot in the field of 64. Despite having the second longest championship odds, surpassed only by NC State, the Gators shouldn’t be underestimated. This is particularly due to their top player, Jac Caglianone who is a two-way stud, giving them a fighting chance.
On Saturday evening, the Gators will have the chance to demonstrate why they’re a team to watch as they face off against Texas A&M, the favorite to win. Despite a significant injury during the super regionals, Texas A&M still manages to surpass the top-seeded Vols in BetOnline’s CWS winner odds.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 College World Series?
Texas A&M (+265)
Is it possible for the Aggies to secure their inaugural College World Series title even without their top hitter? During the opening inning of their Super Regional face-off against Oregon, their star batter, Braden Montgomery, incurred a season-halting lower leg injury as he slid into home.
Montgomery, a transfer from Stanford last summer, achieved a .322 batting average with 27 home runs and 85 RBI this season. He is expected to be a top-10 pick in the forthcoming MLB Draft.
Even in Montgomery’s absence, the Aggies managed to defeat the Ducks in three games, making it to Omaha for the second time in three seasons. Despite his absence, betting experts are optimistic about their chances of winning a championship. They are even slightly ahead of the highest-ranked, Tennessee.
Montgomery might be out of action, but A&M still boasts several stars at the top of their roster, including freshman prodigy Gavin Grahovac, with a .306 batting average, 22 home runs, and 63 runs batted in. They also have Jace Laviolette, who has a .314 batting average, 28 home runs, and 77 runs batted in.
Although the Aggies have the potential to make significant impact with their batting, it’s their pitching that could lead them to succeed in Omaha, a location where scoring runs is typically challenging.
If they secure a lead, they have the ability to rely on Evan Aschenbeck (with 28 appearances, 6-1, 1.66 ERA, 0.80 WHIP), Chris Cortez (who has 22 appearances, 9-3, 2.83 ERA), Brad Rudis (with 23 appearances, 6-0, 2.23 ERA), and Shane Sdao (with 20 appearances, 5-1, 2.96 ERA) to close out the game.
One potential drawback about Texas A&M is their high strikeout rate at the plate. Throughout the season, they have struck out 562 times, equating to an average of 9.1 strikeouts per game.
Tennessee (+275)
Tennessee has enjoyed considerable success in the last four seasons, however, the Vols have not yet achieved the ultimate victory in the program’s history.
Could this finally be their year? After a shocking loss in Game 2 of their Super Regional matchup against the unexpected contenders, Evansville, they found themselves on the ropes. However, they rebounded impressively, smashing seven home runs to secure a 12-1 victory in Game 3.
The Vols, along with the ladies, are fans of the long ball, having hit a whopping 173 home runs this season. At the forefront is leadoff hitter Christian Moore, boasting a .375 average, 32 HR, and 71 RBI. He spearheads a powerful lineup that includes five players with 18 or more homers and 12 with at least five.
What distance will their immense power take them in a ballpark where many robustly hit balls result in loud outs? Their 2021 and 2023 College World Series journeys didn’t culminate in triumph, suggesting they might need to modify some of their home run swings into double swings to succeed.
The Vols often overshadow their pitching with their batting prowess, but they also possess considerable pitching talent. If this talent delivers in Omaha, their dependence on offense will significantly decrease.
Kentucky (+575)
Seven out of the eight teams in this year’s College World Series bracket have previously been to Omaha, with all seven making an appearance in at least one of the last five CWS editions.
That leaves Kentucky as the lone first-timer in the field. Can the Wildcats come away with a championship in their first appearance?
Statistically, many numbers are not as prominent as those from Texas A&M, Tennessee, or some others in the field.
The Wildcats are not without some power, primarily from their two Ryans, Waldschmidt (.346, 14 HR, 46 RBI) and Nicholson (.299, 21 HR, 61 RBI). Furthermore, they’ve managed to steal 117 bases, with Waldschmidt leading with 24 successful attempts out of 31, closely followed by Emilien Pitre with 25 successful attempts out of 34.
At Charles Schwab Field, the ability to generate runs quickly can be invaluable, potentially making the difference between an early departure and a journey to the championship series.
Moreover, don’t be put off betting on the Wildcats even though they have a 5.02 team ERA. Following a rough regional opener in which they let in eight runs against Western Michigan, Kentucky bounced back and only conceded three runs in their last two regional matches and the two Super Regional games. In these games, they played against Travis Bazzana, a highly regarded MLB Draft prospect, and Oregon State.

The College World Series, in its inaugural years of 1947 and 1948, determined the tournament winner through a best-of-three championship series. However, from 1949 to 2002, the winner was decided by a single championship game. The best-of-three championship series format was reinstated in 2003.
