There are several key points from Week 2 that highlight why this matchup is intriguing. Let’s start with Illinois, which has a shorter story to unpack.
Following Illinois’ 23-17 upset victory over #19 Kansas, head coach Bret Bielema was seen in tears post-game. While it was a touching moment for the program, I’m not swayed by emotional reactions.Regardless of the win, I was planning to fade Illinois, and those tears only add fuel to the fire. I follow a rule: fade storming the field or court and fade tears—unless you’ve won it all. The job isn’t finished.

Now, let’s dive into Central Michigan . The Chippewas are coming off a disheartening 52-16 loss to Florida International as 3.5-point favorites. Central Michigan committed six turnovers in that game, which was a major factor in their defeat. However, despite the mistakes, Central Michigan actually outperformed Florida International in several key areas: they led in total yards with 369, had almost 70 more passing yards, and were more efficient on third downs. The turnovers were the main issue.
Quarterback Joe Labas’s interceptions were largely due to underthrown passes or miscommunications, issues that can be addressed in practice. With strong team chemistry and many key players returning from last year, including offensive weapons and some of their secondary, Central Michigan is poised to bounce back and deliver a solid performance in Week 3.
With Central Michigan heading to Champaign, IL, as 20-point underdogs this Saturday, I believe this line is too high. Expect the Chippewas to come prepared and ready to bounce back. Fade the upset, fade the tears, and trust Central Michigan to cover the spread.
