The top seed in the French Open men’s singles draw may have been forced to make an early exit due to injury, but that puts the spotlight squarely on the two young stars who will duel in the first of today’s semifinals, former number one Carlos Alcaraz and new number one Jannik Sinner.
Even before Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the tournament after suffering a torn meniscus in his round of 16 win over Francisco Cerundolo, Alcaraz and Sinner were out ahead as the leading French Open men’s singles favorites.
But with the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion out of the mix, the winner of this matchup will be firmly favored over the winner of the second semifinal between #4 seed Alexander Zverev and #7 seed Casper Ruud.
Djokovic’s withdrawal also means that Sinner will become the new world number following the tournament, even if he loses today. Entering the tournament, Sinner was in line to become the first Italian man to ascend to the top spot in the rankings if he reached the final, even if Djokovic were to win the title.
But will this year’s Australian Open champion add to his achievements by making it two for two for major finals in 2024? Sinner may be the higher seed, but Alcaraz is favored to reach his third Grand Slam singles final.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner Betting Analysis
Do sports betting sites like BetOnline and Bovada have the right man installed as the favorite to win this match?
Alcaraz missed much of the spring clay swing due to injury, but he has put in a series of superb showings in Paris. On the way to the semis, he has faced three seeded players and hasn’t faced a serious challenge from any of them.
2024 French Open Results for Carlos Alcaraz
- Quarterfinals: defeated #9 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4
- Fourth Round: defeated #21 Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3, 6-1
- Third Round: defeated #27 Sebastian Korda 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3
- Second Round: defeated Jesper de Jong 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2
- First Round: defeated J.J. Wolf 6-1, 6-2, 6-1
In five matches, Alcaraz has dropped only one set, the third set of his second-round win over Jesper de Jong. In the quarterfinals, he dispatched #9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets with relatively little stress, taking only two hours and 18 minutes to dispatch the former French Open finalist.
Sinner’s only match to date against a seeded player is Tuesday’s quarterfinal win over Dimitrov.
But like Alcaraz, Sinner has dropped only one set, the opening set of his fourth-round win over Corentin Moutet. In the quarterfinals, he took only two hours and 32 minutes to see off Dimitrov, who had played rather well in reaching the French Open quarterfinals for the first time.
2024 French Open Results for Jannik Sinner
- Quarterfinals: defeated #10 Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)
- Fourth Round: defeated Corentin Moutet 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1
- Third Round: defeated Pavel Kotov 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
- Second Round: defeated Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2, 6-4
- First Round: defeated Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 6-3, 6-4
With both players performing at a high level in the tournament, we could be in for a classic clash.
This will be their tenth meeting but just their second in a Grand Slam. Previously, they met in the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open. Alcaraz, who went on to claim his first Grand Slam singles title, defeated Sinner 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 6-3 in an epic five-hour, 18-minute encounter.
Picking a winner here is a tough call. Alcaraz is the superior player on this surface, but Sinner has been the best men’s tennis player in the world over the last year. If I were to give one player the edge, I’d ride the hottest of hands and back Sinner.
But for betting purposes, I’m staying away from the winner picks and circling the over for the match as the best bet to back.
