Wednesday, June 5’s MLB schedule begins with an afternoon showdown between the Atlanta Braves (34-24) and Boston Red Sox (30-31) at 1:35 p.m. ET.

These clubs played their first of two games last night as the Braves left Fenway Park with a massive 8-3 win over the Red Sox. Ozzie Albies was Atlanta’s top performer of the day as the veteran infield recorded two hits, a homer, and three RBIs across four at-bats.

Can Atlanta sweep the series with another win? Or will Boston find a way to get back to being .500 again?

This Braves vs. Red Sox preview aims to answer those questions, so let’s take a look at my prediction and MLB best bets for today.

Braves vs Red Sox Predictions & MLB Picks Today (6/5)

If the Red Sox want to split this two-game series, they need a more complete effort than what they showed yesterday. After all, Boston was up 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning. Unfortunately, it couldn’t hold on as Atlanta scored five unanswered runs for the rest of the way.

Tuesday’s loss encapsulated the Red Sox’s recent home struggles. They’ve now dropped to 3-7 SU across their last 10 outings at Fenway Park while being outscored by an average of 3.6 runs in defeat. That’s without mentioning how Boston’s 37.5% winning percentage as the home favorite this season ranks fifth-worst in the Majors.

Meanwhile, the Braves are so good that they’ve only been the road underdog twice in 2024. They currently own eighth-best success rate in away matchups (55.6%) and have now scored at least eight runs in three of their last six away contests.

Additionally, the Braves are more than comfortable playing at Fenway Park. Brian Snitker’s club is 8-3 SU in its last 11 road games against the Red Sox, outscoring the latter by 1.7 runs per game.

The Braves have owned the Red Sox at Fenway Park in recent years.

If the Braves want to sweep this series, they need a strong start from Spencer Schwellenbach. The 24-year-old righty didn’t perform too well in his MLB debut against the Washington Nationals last week, allowing three earned runs and a homer on five hits in a 7-2 loss.

The good news for Atlanta is that Boston’s Nick Pivetta hasn’t exactly been pitching well either. The former 2013 fourth-rounder has been a mixed bag this season and just allowed seven earned runs, five walks, 10 hits, and a home run in 8 2/3 innings across his last two starts, picking up the loss in both appearances.

That’s without mentioning how Pivetta has also pitched to a 7.51 ERA in his last 12 games against the Braves.

Taking the above into account, let’s back an Atlanta win today. The Red Sox have been underwhelming to watch at Fenway Park all season and yesterday’s loss further highlighted that fact. If the Braves bats get to Pivetta early, this game could quickly turn ugly.

Having said that, the best bet is to take the Braves as moneyline underdogs and move on.

Ozuna has been an on-base machine this season, having already racked up 130 total bases with an NL-leading .999 on-base + slugging percentage. The two-time MLB All-Star has amassed 38 TBs in his last 17 games alone (2.2 per outing), finishing with the Over on this prop nine times — including in three of his last five outings.

Additionally, Ozuna has 26 TBs in 12 career games against Pivetta, slashing .308/.296/1.000 along the way. Needless to say, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t pull through with at least a pair of bases today.

Best Braves vs Red Sox MLB Prop Bet: Cristopher Sanchez o5.5 Hits Allowed (+104)
