Boise State vs #7 Oregon: NCAA Football Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (9/7)

The Boise State Broncos are coming to town to face the 7th ranked Oregon Ducks after both teams came away with a win last weekend. It’s Week 2 of the College Football season, and personally I think this will be a very underrated matchup. The Oregon Ducks underperformed last weekend, only beating Idaho 24-14. Dillon Gabriel threw for 380 yards and 2 TDs and Jordan James added 95 yards and another tuddy on the ground, but everyone expected more out of this Ducks team. Personally they were my pick to win the Big Ten at the start of the season, but they certainly didn’t play like it in their first game.

Gabriel was sacked resulting in a fumble recovered by the Vandals, as they came to play. Idaho was able to stop the Ducks on 4th down twice, setting up a quick touchdown on one occasion. I think everyone expected the Ducks offense to break out, and they racked up plenty of yards, but they missed a field goal, had 3 “three and outs”, fumbled after a long drive and turned it over on downs twice. With the Ducks getting another game at home, against a defense that allowed 45 points in their opener, I could certainly see the Oregon offense taking a big step forward.

But What About Boise?

As for the Broncos, they were nearly a one man show offensively. Ashton Jeanty had 20 carries for 267 yards and 6 TDs on the ground. The man was racing towards the Heisman trophy at the back of the end zone. Maddux Madsen also threw for 280 yards with just 1 TD and and interception as well. It was a road game for the Broncos, but they faced Georgia Southern, a team picked to finish at the bottom of the Sun Belt conference. Although they won and were explosive offensively, the game as a whole was a let down for the Boise defense. They couldn’t stop GA Southern, and they will have an even tougher task against the Ducks on the road.

The Broncos are a favorite to make the CFP if they can win the Mountain West Conference, but they have a tall task this weekend. Boise won’t be able to rely on Jeanty as much, as the Ducks front 7 is nasty and only allowed 49 rushing yards on Saturday. Can Madsen air it out and keep up with the Ducks? And will we even see the explosive Oregon offense that everyone expects?

Can Jeanty Run Over Ducks on the Road?

Ashton Jeanty ran for 267 yards and 6 TDs last week on the road

Jeanty ran all over Georgia Southern last weekend, but they weren’t great at stopping the run last year either. They gave up 159 yards per game, and clearly not much changed over the offseason. However, the Ducks’ defense will be different. For starters, they ranked 10th in rushing yards allowed last season, and even after losing 4 vets up front, they didn’t miss a step in their first matchup. The Broncos will be a tougher opponent than the Vandals (I hope?), but I still see the Ducks defense forcing Boise to use Madsen’s arm. If they shut down Jeanty and force Boise to beat them in the air, I think we could see trouble for the young QB, as the Ducks snagged 2 interceptions last weekend. Going into this hostile environment isn’t easy for anybody, and it showed that Boise can’t necessarily rely on their defense to save them.

Can Ducks Offense Come Alive?

But that does beg the above question. While I’ll admit I’m not too familiar with Idaho’s defense, Boise’s sincerely struggled on the road against Georgia Southern. Sure, we all expected the Ducks to put up 50 last weekend, but you can imagine there would be some jitters and issues for Gabriel in his first start at Oregon. Now, in this second week, I think he will be much more comfortable, still in front of his new fans, and although 380 and 2 TDs is fantastic, the Ducks need to score more points. They certainly will need to in the Big Ten, facing much tougher defenses in that conference than these opening games.

What impressed e most about Oregon in Week 1, despite their lack of points they controlled the ball for nearly 2/3 of the game. Gabriel dropped back to pass 50 times, and they also rushed the ball 37 times. The Ducks generated so much on offense, and simply couldn’t score. To me, that’s a very easy fix for Dan Lanning, and I trust them to come out flying against Boise.

I think we might find ourselves with a one sided shootout, as I do have my doubts on the Broncos being able to score against the Ducks defense at home. However, I do think the Ducks roll, as they racked up nearly 500 total yards of offense last weekend. Boise proved they might struggle defensively, and I think Gabriel finally clicks with his new guys on Saturday.

We will be taking the Tight End Terrance Ferguson over his 47.5 receiving yards. He cleared this line with ease last week as he caught 7 passes, and lead all Ducks receivers in yards. He averaged 12.4 yards per catch, which is a significant jump from his 9.9 average last season. I think Lanning will have Gabriel go to his TE plenty in order to keep the defense on their toes, and free up Tez Johnson on the outside. We are trusting Gabriel to spread the love through the air and find our big bodied TE for plenty of connections at home this Saturday.
