Astros vs Padres Predictions & MLB Picks Today (9/18)

After the Padres opened the series with a win, the Astros got revenge in the form of a 4-3 victory Tuesday night. After the game was tied following nine innings, Houston outfielder Kyle Tucker recorded the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th before Hector Norris came in the bottom of the frame for his 18th save of the season.

It isn’t surprising to see another win for the Astros, who own a 64.1% win percentage since Aug. 6 — tied for the second-best success rate in the Majors during that stretch. They’re also 5-1 SU in their last six games, which includes a trio of road victories.

Tuesday’s outcome also marked the end of the Padres’ four-game win streak. Having said that, San Diego has only lost back-to-back outings three times since the MLB All-Star Break, proving that manager Mike Shildt knows how to get his team back on track.

It’s also worth noting that the Padres are 6-2 SU in their last six home games against the Astros, leaving time to tell if yesterday’s result was a fluke or not.

How will the Padres respond to yesterday’s loss?

Left-handed veteran pitcher Framber Valdez draws the start for the Astros tonight. The two-time All-Star hurler has only lost one of his last 14 starts, having gone 9-1 with a 2.10 ERA and an average of 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings during that span.

Conversely, Valdez is winless with a 4.50 ERA in two career meetings with the Padres. That’s without mentioning how San Diego is also 24-19 SU against left-handed pitchers this season.

Meanwhile, Padres RHP Dylan Cease will look to continue his momentum after pitching six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in Friday’s win over the San Francisco Giants. The win was also Cease’s first since Aug. 17, meaning it remains to be seen if he’s officially back to form.

The Astros are a top-10 team against righties, though, so Cease can’t afford to make too many mistakes.

Framber Valdez vs. Dylan Cease should be a treat for MLB fans on Wednesday.

In a showdown that could go either way, I’ll take the Padres to win. The Astros won yesterday, however, that rarely occurs when they visit San Diego. Furthermore, Valdez tends to struggle against the Padres, who have rarely lost back-to-back outings throughout the last two months.

Let’s back the Padres on the moneyline before moving on to the prop pick of the day.

The value of this prop is impressive when you consider Machado’s recent performances. In his last 20 games (84 at-bats), the six-time MLB All-Star is slashing .321/.356/.631 with 27 hits, seven home runs, 28 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. He’s averaging 2.0 runs + RBIs during that stretch while finishing with the Over on this prop 14 times — a 70.0% success rate.

Considering how the Over on this prop is also 15-5 in his last 20 games against the Astros, Machado is certainly a candidate for a big showing tonight.
