Astros vs Orioles Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/22)

Both of these teams enter tonight’s showdown looking to bounce back from defeat. After going 10-1 SU across an 11-game stretch, the Astros have been brought down to earth with back-to-back losses to the Boston Red Sox, which includes a 4-1 loss less than 24 hours ago.

Meanwhile, the Orioles are coming off Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the New York Mets, resulting in their record dropping to 4-6 SU in the last 10 games. Making matters worse is that New York’s two losses to Baltimore this week came in walk-off fashion, highlighting the club’s inability to close things out when it matters.

Nevertheless, tonight’s collision marks the second Astros-Orioles series of the 2024 MLB season. These franchises previously met at Minute Maid Park back in June, resulting in a three-game sweep for Houston as it outscored Baltimore by a total of 27-13 on aggregate.

Will the Astros defeat the Orioles for the fourth straight time this season?

Even playing at Camden Yards might not make much of a difference for the host team. After all, the Orioles are only 1-4 SU in their last five home games against the Astros.

On the flip side, the Astros are heading to Baltimore having won eight consecutive road outings. Houston’s pitchers played a massive role in that success, holding opponents to an average of 2.5 runs per game while outscoring them by an average of 3.0.

It remains to be seen if Spencer Arrighetti is ready to continue that trend. The Orioles’ 24-year-old righty has won just one of his last eight appearances as he pitched to a 4.53 ERA while allowing 23 earned runs and nine homers across 45 2/3 innings. At the same time, Arrighetti did tally 13 strikeouts while allowing two runs in seven innings in his last road games against the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 10.

Meanwhile, the Astros must go up against Orioles superstar Corbin Burnes. The former NL Cy Young winner is aiming to rebound after being pulverized in the former of eight runs on 10 hits in a 12-10 loss to the Red Sox six days ago. That’s without mentioning how he also allowed four runs in five innings in a 5-1 loss to the Astros back in June.

Will Orioles RHP Corbin Burnes bounce back against the Astros tonight?

When these teams meet tonight, I’m predicting an Astros victory. At the end of the day, Houston has produced more recent results and has consistently found a way to win on the road. The same can’t be said for the Orioles, who have struggled throughout August and have barely been able to defeat the Astros at home lately.

With that in mind, I also imagine that the 8-run total will be surpassed. After all, nine of the last 11 Astros-Orioles matchups finished with more than eight combined runs. The upcoming opponents averaged a combined 12.2 runs per game in those meetings, which includes a 13.3-run average in June’s series at Minute Maid Park.

Given that both Arrighetti and Burnes have been unpredictable lately, we could be in line for a decent amount of offense this evening.

The 25-year-old catcher/DH has been one of the Astros’ best players throughout August. In his last 12 games (51 at-bats), Diaz is slashing .333/.346/.647 while tallying 17 hits, seven runs, five homers, and 12 RBIs. When it comes to this prop, he finished with the Over in eight of those games while averaging 1.6 R+R per game.

Additionally, Diaz is batting .357 with two HRs, nine RBIs, and eight runs in eight career meetings with the Orioles, which includes finishing with the Over in each of the last six tilts.
