The start for the Las Vegas Aces hasn’t been perfect, yet the back-to-back WNBA champions seem to be in good health and gaining momentum. This evening, they aim for their third consecutive victory as they face off Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky (7:00 pm ET, Amazon Prime Video).
The Aces, with an 8-6 record, have recently clinched consecutive 11-point victories against the Seattle Storm and Connecticut Sun. Chelsea Gray made her first appearance of the season in the earlier win, following an absence from the first 12 games.
The Aces are presently in fifth place in the WNBA standings, trailing the New York Liberty (15-3) by five games. However, the return of Gray, coupled with two notable victories and an upcoming series of potentially advantageous games, provides the champions with an opportunity to ascend in the rankings before the WNBA pauses for next month’s Olympics.
Similar to the Aces, the Sky (6-9) have also managed to secure wins in consecutive games. They broke their four-game losing streak with a win against the struggling Dallas Wings last Thursday. Subsequently, Chicago managed a comeback from being 15 points down in the second half to narrowly defeat Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever 88-87 on Sunday. Reese was the standout player with a career-high of 25 points and 16 rebounds.
So far this season, the Sky have proven to be a formidable opponent against top league teams. Will they bring another impressive performance tonight? Or will the Aces maintain their winning streak in their second out of five consecutive games against the Eastern Conference?

The Sky secured a remarkable victory on the road against the New York Liberty on May 23. In their rematch at Wintrust Arena on June 4, they were ahead by a single point entering the final quarter. Additionally, they managed to keep the score difference to single digits in their two home games against the Connecticut Sun, with scores of 86-82 on May 25 and 83-75 on June 12, although they lost both games.
Thus, it’s unwise to underestimate their capability to compete with the Aces, particularly as they are currently experiencing their best offensive stretch of the season. Chicago has managed to score over 80 points in four successive games, a feat they didn’t achieve at any point in the previous season.
Reese’s eight consecutive double-doubles have played a part in the recent offensive increase. Chennedy Carter has also made significant contributions, having an average of 19.0 PPG and a shooting percentage of 66.7% from the field in the last four games.
Before the Olympic break, seven out of nine of Chicago’s games are against the Aces (twice), Storm (twice), Liberty (twice), and Lynx. Despite this, they are entering this challenging period confidently due to the good performances of Reese and Carter, the improved form of Kamilla Cardoso who scored a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds in Sunday’s victory over the Fever, and Marina Mabrey’s consistent valuable inputs.
In light of this, I believe tonight’s match may be overwhelming for them against the champions. The Aces have demonstrated robust performance in their recent two games, and should they replicate this tonight, they are likely to win with ease. The Sky might have managed to recover from a 15-point deficit against the Fever, however, facing the Aces is an entirely different challenge.
