Las Vegas Aces vs Minnesota Lynx Prediction & Expert Picks (8/23)

After suffering their seventh home loss and tenth overall loss of the season, the Las Vegas Aces’ three-peat chances are looking rather questionable. A win tonight in a road rematch against the Minnesota Lynx (9:30 pm ET, ION) may not set things back in the right direction, but it will provide a boost ahead of a favorable portion of their schedule.

In their first three post-Olympic break games, the Aces (17-10) have home losses to the Liberty and Lynx sandwiched around a home win over the Sparks. On Wednesday night, they lost to the Lynx 98-87, their second double-digit home loss to Minnesota this season.

With 13 regular season games left, the two-time defending champs are fifth in the WNBA standings. That’s seven games behind the league-leading Liberty (25-4), who are now favored to win the franchise’s first title.

Meanwhile, the Lynx (20-8) are 3-0 since the season resumed, and they are only a half-game behind the Sun (20-7) for second in the standings. Their championship odds have also shortened, as Minnesota is now +600 for the title, third behind New York (+135) and Las Vegas (+210) at BetOnline.

If they can defend their home court tonight, those title odds may shorten even further, and the Lynx will also wrap up the regular season series against the Aces.

Las Vegas Aces vs Minnesota Lynx Betting Analysis

When the Aces went 10-1 in their first 11 games after Chelsea Gray’s return, it seemed like they were back to their best, or at least close to it, considering that nine of those ten were wins were by double digits.

But with three losses in their last four games, they find themselves a full three games out of second with the number of remaining games dwindling.

It’s not just the losses, but it’s the way they have occurred.

Against the Liberty last Saturday, they jumped out to a 28-17 lead with 2:13 left in the first quarter, then were outscored 62-39 the rest of the way and trailed for the final 25:38 of the game.

Against the Lynx on Wednesday, they allowed 54 first-half points and trailed for the last 26:07 of the game.

With a team this talented and with a track record of success, it matters more what they do in the postseason than in the regular season.

But they are putting themselves in position to have to win more on the road than they did in winning back-to-back titles. Given that they are 8-3 on the road and 9-7 at home, that might not be the worst thing, but the Liberty (14-1), Sun (11-3), Lynx (12-3), and Storm (11-3) are all strong at home.

While “what’s wrong with the Aces?” is a big and legitimate question, a lot of praise must be directed at the Lynx for winning by double digits at Michelob Ultra Arena twice this season and putting up a lot of points in both wins. They have scored more than 95 points only four times this season, but two of those times have been against the Aces on the road.

Las Vegas Aces vs Minnesota Lynx Prediction & Expert Picks

Nine of their final 13 regular season games being on the road gives the Aces a chance to prepare for potentially having to do a decent bit of road work in the postseason.

Fortunately, they have done well on the road to this point, including wins at Seattle and Minnesota.

Something’s not quite right with them right now, but if there’s one team you can’t write off prematurely, it’s the team that has won back-to-back championships and has four Team USA gold medalists, including the world’s best player.

The Lynx are a tough team to take down at the Target Center, but I look for the Aces to get back into the win column with a big win tonight in Minneapolis, led by a big night by A’ja Wilson, who was held below 20 points for only the third time this season in Wednesday’s loss.

Aces vs Lynx Prediction: Aces to win

Aces vs Lynx Expert Picks: 1) Aces ML, 2) Aces vs Lynx over 166.5, 3) A’ja Wilson over 38.5 points + rebounds + assists (-114 at BetOnline)
