LAS VEGAS — Jakub Demek has checked off one of the last boxes on his to-do list before reaching the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights.
Their mantra significantly emphasizes the necessity for players who have turned professional to attend one additional development camp after finishing their first full season.
The 21-year-old forward prospect, who was the fourth-round pick (No. 128) in the 2021 NHL Draft, can consider it done. Last month, Demek took on a leadership role in the camp, mentoring younger players as requested by Vegas from its seasoned players.
“When I was younger, I required guidance from others to understand how things operated here,” said Demek. “I’m attempting to be as helpful as those who assisted me in the past.”
“During your final developmental camp, you encounter the final piece of development – leadership,” said Wil Nichol, Golden Knights director of player development. “It plays a significant role in development as you continue to pass on the culture.”
Last season, Demek scored 16 points, comprising seven goals and nine assists, in 55 games. This was his first professional season with the American Hockey League’s Henderson. On Feb. 23, he was briefly called up to Vegas but did not make his NHL debut.
He stated that he cherishes the practice experience with the Golden Knights, and expects another opportunity will come his way.
“Experiencing it was like a dream come true,” declared Demek. “I learned a great deal from it. I’m hopeful that I’ll have the chance to witness it again.”
Demek, like many young players, stated his goal is to increase his speed, strength, and size. He is also working on understanding professional systems and learning how to be in the right place at the right time.
“Transitioning from junior level, it’s primarily about skill and speed,” Demek stated. He amassed 65 points, comprising of 24 goals and 41 assists, playing for Edmonton and Kamloops in the Western Hockey League across two seasons from 2021 to 2023. “At the professional level, everyone is highly skilled, incredibly fast, and strong. Scoring and earning points become more challenging. However, with experience, it’s gradually becoming easier,” he added.
Demek revealed that his summer workout routine hasn’t dramatically changed, still incorporating a lot of skill work, weightlifting, and a balanced diet. His aim is to transform into a fully-rounded 200-foot player, a requirement for forwards when they get the summons to the NHL.
“He said, ‘We’re attempting to concentrate on a different aspect of the game. I’m also scrutinizing my game. I’m honing all facets of the game to enhance my abilities.'”
