John Tortorella Named Assistant Coach for Team USA at 4 Nations Face Off

The Flyers’ head coach is among four coaches named to Team USA’s coaching roster.

John Tortorella, the current head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, has been appointed as the assistant coach of Team USA for the National Hockey League’s 4-Nations Face-Off, according to an announcement today by USA Hockey. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Montreal and Boston from February 12 to 20.

The February 4-Nations Face-Off will be the fifth occasion Tortorella has served as a coach for USA Hockey.

Heading into the 2024-25 season, Tortorella is recognized as the ninth most successful coach in NHL history and the second most successful among those born in the US. Tortorella’s most recent role was serving as the head coach for Team USA in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey under the aegis of USA Hockey. His past positions include assistant coach for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that won silver, head coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team at the 2008 IIHF Men’s World Championship, and associate coach for the U.S. in the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

In his two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella has achieved a coaching record of 69-71-24. He surpassed Darryl Sutter to become ninth in NHL history with 738 wins during a game against San Jose on March 12, 2023. Furthermore, on December 29, 2023, in a game at Seattle, Tortorella reached his 1500th game as an NHL head coach. This achievement positioned him as the eighth all-time, third among active coaches, and the first U.S.-born head coach in NHL history.

The Boston, Massachusetts-born NHL coach has secured 742 victories over his 22-season career. In 2004, he guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first ever Stanley Cup in franchise history. At present, Tortorella holds the third position among active NHL coaches for games coached (1547) and is fourth in terms of wins (742). In terms of NHL history, he stands eighth for games coached and ninth for wins.
