John Tortorella and David Quinn have been appointed as assistant coaches for the United States team in the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

They become part of coach Mike Sullivan’s staff, alongside John Hynes.

“Leading our team, we have an exceptionally skilled coaching staff and we are very enthusiastic about this group,” stated Bill Guerin, Minnesota Wild’s general manager and U.S. general manager for the 4 Nations Face-Off. “Their individual and collective experiences will significantly benefit our country as we aim to secure a championship in February.”

The first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, featuring only NHL players, will see teams from the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden compete from February 12-20. The competition will consist of seven games over a nine-day period, taking place at TD Garden in Boston and Bell Centre in Montreal.

Entering his third season as the coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella is already ninth in NHL history with 742 victories and eighth with 1,512 games over 22 seasons. His career stretches across teams like the Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers. Tortorella’s notable achievements include leading the Lightning to a Stanley Cup victory in 2004 and receiving the Jack Adams Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s coach of the year, twice in 2004 and 2017.

The individual, who is 66 years old, served as a coach for the U.S. during the IIHF World Championship in 2008 and the World Cup of Hockey in 2016. Additionally, they were an assistant at the 2005 World Championship.

For six seasons with the Lightning, Rangers, and Canucks, Sullivan served as an assistant under Tortorella.

Quinn is embarking on his inaugural season as Sullivan’s assistant for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was previously dismissed from his position as coach for the San Jose Sharks on April 24, after a two-season record of 41-98-25. Quinn also had a three-season stint as coach for the Rangers, and his career record stands at 137-185-50.

The 58-year-old served as a coach for the U.S. team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and the World Championship in 2022 and 2023. In addition, he was an assistant coach for the U.S. team three other times at the World Championship, specifically in 2007, 2012 and 2016.

Sullivan, who is about to start his 10th season coaching the Penguins, was appointed as U.S. coach for the 4 Nations Face-Off on May 18. Hynes, who is about to begin his second season coaching the Wild, was named an assistant on June 11.

Forwards Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights), Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers), and defensemen Adam Fox (New York Rangers), Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) were the first six players named to the U.S. roster, on June 28. The remainder of the roster, which will consist of 23 NHL players (20 skaters, three goalies) will be named later this year.
