Joe Brand Named Radio Play-By-Play Broadcaster of the Penguins Radio Network

Joe Brand has been appointed as the radio play-by-play voice of the Penguins Radio Network by the Pittsburgh Penguins, President of Business Operations, Kevin Acklin, announced today.

Brand will be responsible for play-by-play commentary during all regular-season and playoff games for the Penguins. He will mainly be accompanied in the commentary booth by Phil Bourque, a seasoned color analyst and two-time Stanley Cup Champion. Paul Steigerwald will resume his role as the host for pre- and post-game segments.

“Acklin expressed enthusiasm over welcoming Joe Brand into the Penguins family, introducing him to what he dubs as the best fans in hockey. He mentioned that the Penguins have been lucky to have some of the best game commentators, and they’re eager to see Joe create his own legacy in Pittsburgh.”

After fulfilling his role as the studio host and fill-in play-by-play broadcaster on WGN Radio 720 AM for the Chicago Blackhawks for the last three seasons, the 33-year-old is now joining the Penguins. His main responsibilities with the Blackhawks were hosting pre-game, intermission, and post-game shows for all regular-season games in Chicago and hosting a weekly radio show named ‘Blackhawks Live’.

Brand, in addition to his hosting responsibilities, also served as the main play-by-play broadcaster for Blackhawks preseason and selected regular-season games. This was particularly evident last season when he stepped in for John Wiedeman. He worked in the commentary booth with ex-NHL players Troy Murray and Hockey Hall-of-Famer Chris Chelios.

Brand showcases his versatile play-calling abilities not just in hockey, but in various other sports including baseball, football, and basketball. This Chicago native has over a decade of experience in providing commentary for both professional and collegiate level sports. He has been the voice behind selected regular-season games of the White Sox on ESPN 1000 WMVP, hosting both pre- and post-game shows. In addition, Brand has lent his broadcast expertise to the Kane County Cougars, a team in the American Association of Professional Baseball, which is an official Partner League of Major League Baseball, serving as their radio and television broadcaster.

Brand graduated from Illinois State University, earning a degree in broadcast journalism.
