Last season, as a freshman, the Red Wings goalie prospect assisted Michigan State in securing the BIG Ten title.

DETROIT – It was an unforgettable past calendar year for Detroit Red Wings goalie prospect Trey Augustine.

Augustine, who was chosen as the 41st overall pick by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, secured a gold medal for the United States at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship held in Sweden. Following this, the 19-year-old finished his first year at Michigan State University and then participated in the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia, where he absorbed as much information and experience as possible.

“During last month’s Red Wings’ 2024 Development Camp, Augustine expressed gratitude for his incredible opportunities. “I’ve been presented with some truly unbelievable chances,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful to all those who have assisted me in reaching my current position. I’m hopeful for even more exciting opportunities in the future.”

During the 2023-24 season, Augustine made a mark as the youngest starting goalie in NCAA Division 1 hockey. He posted a record of 23-9-2 with a goals-against average of 2.96, a .918 save percentage, and three shutouts in 35 games.

“Augustine instills in me a great deal of confidence, even though I’m not even a part of his team,” stated Dan Cleary, the Red Wings’ Assistant Director of Player Development. “He carries himself with a composed, cool demeanor, but beneath that exterior, there’s a fierce competitive spirit burning.”

Assisting the Spartans in securing their first-ever BIG Ten title was an extraordinary experience for Augustine. He is returning to Michigan State’s campus with an enhanced comprehension of what is required to achieve success at the collegiate level.

“Winning every night isn’t easy,” admitted Augustine. “You need to approach every game with the understanding that no team will back off, particularly since we had a successful year. We’re the team to beat in the upcoming year.”

Augustine also stated that he gained substantial knowledge while playing with the U.S. men’s team at the Worlds.

“Being able to go over there and mingle with numerous professional players was an incredible opportunity,” said Augustine. “I relished every moment, taking in their advice and learning from them. Observing their daily preparation up-close was truly special and fascinating. Being part of such a team was a unique experience.”

While representing the Red Wings organization at Worlds, Alex Lyon mentored Augustine in their goaltending pair.

“Alex is a fantastic person who taught me a great deal during his tenure,” commented Augustine. “Observing his preparation and the seriousness with which he approached even game days was a refreshing departure from the attitudes of my former teammates.”

Augustine, aspiring to establish himself in the NHL someday, emulates his game after Sergei Bobrovsky, the Florida Panthers netminder. His mature approach sets him apart as he relentlessly pursues his ultimate goal, distinguishing the South Lyon, Michigan native.

“Augustine’s maturity and attention to detail in the rink is remarkable, especially considering his young age,” said Red Savage, a fellow prospect for the Red Wings and teammate at Michigan State. “I often have to remind myself that he’s only 19, and I’m actually two years his senior.”
