2023-24 Season Rewind: Anton Lundell

2023-24 Season Rewind: Anton Lundell

The 22-year-old center gained momentum during his third season in the NHL.

Talk about finishing strong.

Former first-round pick Anton Lundell really found his rhythm in the second half of his third NHL campaign, peaking at the ideal time for the Florida Panthers.

The 22-year-old accumulated a total of 35 points during the regular season, composed of 13 goals and 22 assists. Out of these points, 22 (11 goals, 11 assists) were achieved in the last 39 games of the season.

He was quick on the draw and also achieved a career high by winning 54.9% of his faceoffs.

Lundell, who signed a six-year contract extension on July 3, took his game to another level during the playoffs, capitalizing on the momentum he had been carrying.

“His game truly improved,” stated forward Sam Reinhart. “Even before Benny (Sam Bennett) left, I believe you could see it, but it was definitely noticeable after he left. His performance was elevated. He was yielding results. He was tough on pucks. I think it was quite apparent. I have nothing but praise for him.”

On the road to the Stanley Cup, the young Finn collected a postseason career high 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 24 games, ranking fourth on the team and 10th in the league.

Lundell’s nine primary assists in the playoffs, which set up his linemates to score, were tied for fifth in the NHL.

“Cats captain and fellow Finn, Aleksander Barkov, really praises Lundell, also known as Lundy. He confidently shared that despite Lundell’s young age, he has a mature approach to the game. Barkov admires how Lundell prioritizes his own zone before moving on to the offensive. He further applauded Lundell’s skills and stated that he has been an invaluable asset to the team each year,” Barkov said.

At times, the scoresheet may not highlight or give prominence to the most crucial plays in a game.

Lundell assisted the Panthers in reaching the power play during the playoff run by drawing 20 penalty minutes. Only his teammate Matthew Tkachuk, and Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, drew more penalty minutes in the NHL.

Being in good company suits the talented center who has already participated in 54 playoff games in just three seasons.

COOL STAT

There may not be a greater indication of someone adopting the playing style of the Panthers.

Lundell, not initially recognized for his physical play, did not hesitate to use his body aggressively in this season.

In the 2023-24 season, he compiled 61 hits, more than doubling his previous regular season hit totals of 26 and 29.

The Stanley Cup champion, during the playoffs, averaged about two hits per game, totaling 44 in 24 games. This doubled his previous postseason record of 22.

Look out for Lundy!

BEST GAME

It’s not surprising that one of Lundell’s best games also took place in the playoffs, just like his best play.

He took control in Boston, despite being down 2-0 late in the second period and being ahead 2-1 in the second-round series, providing the Cats with the boost they needed.

He first reduced the deficit to 2-1 by one-timing a pass from Evan Rodrigues straight past Jeremy Swayman.

“Lundell stated, “The initial goal was clearly vital for our team. We had some promising opportunities earlier in the match, but scoring in playoffs is challenging. However, we persisted, created more chances, and eventually scored. This gave us a head start in our game and we set the tone. Our line performed well.”

Lundell wasn’t finished there. He then assisted Bennett in a power-play strike just 3:41 into the third period, leveling the score at 2-2.

Lundell concluded the game with two points, consisting of one goal and one assist. He also blocked two shots and made two hits. He led all skaters with a 75.7 Corsi for percentage, contributing to the Panthers’ series lead of 3-1.

Lundell reduces Boston’s lead by half.

GOAL OF THE YEAR

Lundell’s snipe of the year, scored in overtime at Amerant Bank Arena, was undoubtedly one of the most impressive goals of the season.

He secured the win by taking a pass from Tkachuk and firing a tight-angle shot between the circle and redline just 1:36 into overtime when the score was tied at 2-2 against Ottawa on Feb. 20. This shot beat Joonas Korpisalo.

“His exceptional goal is fitting,” said Ekblad. “He deserves it. He’s consistently winning puck battles and making the correct moves, culminating in an impressive, ESPN Top 10 worthy highlight.”

Lundell’s first overtime winner of his emerging career was the goal.

“He smiled, “For sure, it’s one of the coolest moments I’ve had in this building.”

Lundell’s goal secures the overtime victory for Florida.
