Knicks reach 1-year deal with GM Scott Perry

NEW YORK (AP) — Scott Perry will remain general manager of the New York Knicks after agreeing to a new one-year deal with the team Wednesday.

Perry ran the team’s basketball operations after Steve Mills was fired as president in February. Longtime player agent Leon Rose was hired to replace Mills on March 2, shortly before the NBA season was suspended because of the virus outbreak.

Rose made the decision that Perry would stay for the upcoming season as his first major move. There was a mutual option on Perry’s contract with the Knicks that required resolution by May 1.

“Scott, a revered basketball executive, has been a known associate of mine for over two decades. I am eager to sustain our close collaboration as we strive to construct a victorious team in New York,” stated Rose.

Perry’s return was first reported by Newsday.

Perry, employed by the Knicks since July 14, 2017, managed to endure a chaotic season full of changes, including the early season dismissal of coach David Fizdale and the later removal of Mills. He led the team during the NBA’s trade deadline, transferring veteran forward Marcus Morris to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Decisions regarding interim coach Mike Miller and other members of the Knicks front office will still have to be made by Rose.

The season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic when the Knicks had a record of 21-45.
